Compared to Thursday, Lean slaughter cows
sold fully steady with instances firmer. The
fleshy cow supply was not well tested, especially
the Breaking cows. There was a weaker under
tone noted on the fleshier cows, although many
of them were weighing up pretty full, therefore,
prices may have been closer to steady in the
meat. The majority of the slaughter bull run
was made up of fleshier bulls, with those com
parable to Thursday trending about steady
Nearly 207 head, or 55 percent, of the supply
was made up of slaughter cows

Compared to Thursday, slaughter steers sold
as much as .50 higher on Monday, trading
steady on Tuesday. Monday's supply included
some well-finished steers that were in good con
dition and sold accordingly. On Tuesday, the
bulk of the steers were weighing up pretty full,
and even though the prices quoted are steady,
prices will likely be higher in the meat Bidding
was moderately active, with all grades having
no problem finding a truck to nde on. Slaughter
Holstein steers sold steady to firm due to what
continues to be very good demand. The slaugh
ter heifer supply was very light, and a trend was
not fully established. However, the few on hand
did trend with a firmer undertone. Lean slaugh
ter cows sold steady to instances of .50 lower,
with the fleshier (75-85 percent lean) supply
trading 1.00 to as much as 2.00 lower. Beside
the few standouts in the Breaking cow supply;

impressive considenng the supply was starting
to run a little thin in Lancaster County, and it is
extremely impressive that the quality is very
good considering many area producers are feel
ing the effect of the dry summer of 2002 as their
com and silage supplies are all but diminished
The slaughter Holstein supply was a little
mixed, but still trended near steady Slaughter
heifers were hard to come by early m the week,
so the late week supply was not well tested
However, a firmer undertone was noted
Slaughter cows sold steady to mostly 100 high
er, with even more strength present on the
fleshy cows at times Slaughter bulls sold with a
higher undertone when compared to Tuesday s
very light showing. The reported supply in
cluded 45 percent steers (685 head), 4 percent
heifers (72 head), 31 percent cows (482 head), 6
