828-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 22, 2003 Lancaster Farming KAntlOlim Gc/lfc/' Tour To Explore Chester County’s Underground Railroad Connection LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.) —The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society will sponsor a field trip on Saturday, April 12, to sites related to the Underground Railroad in Chester County. Ronald and Norma Grace Strawbridge will lead the tour. The cost for members is $70.95; nonmem bers, $80.95; and a special rate for groups of six or more, $64.95. Price includes all admissions, step-on guide fee, transportation, and the evening meal. Participants need to bring their own sack lunch for the noon meal. Join fellow explorers on this “trackless trail.” This tour, the first of possibly several on the Under ground Railroad, will depart from the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society at 8:00 a.m. and, after a stop in Christiana to leam about the Christiana Resistance of 1851, will spend the day focusing on the Underground Railroad, slavery, and abolition. The tour will return at approximately 7:00 p.m. At the Chester County Historical Society, par ticipants will be intrigued with the multi-media, hands-on exhibition, Just Over the Line. The dis play includes a map of the Underground Rail road routes and a timeline spanning 1565 to 1865. It explores the origin, operation, folklore, and twentieth-century legacy through interactive displays, historical documents, rare photo graphs, and engaging artifacts. Chester County was an important junction of the Eastern Line, being home to many Quaker abolitionists who, with the free black commu nity, formed a strong network. Some local resi dents, however, were pro-slavery. The display with the KKK robe hanging near a photograph of a local KKK march is chilling. A step-on guide then will join the group in an exploration of numberous sites related to Chest er County’s role in the railroad without tracks or cars but with stations, conductors, and parcels. The guide, from American Heritage Landmark Tours, will provide expert information on Chest er County participation in the abolition effort. Other sites of the day include the Longwood Progressive Quaker Meeting House and a drive past the Pines and other “station” homes. The Old Freight Station has a display of artifacts. At the Birmingham Meeting House, participants will be introduced to the Quaker faith and the role of this meeting house in the Battle of Brandywine. The finale will be the appearance of Harriet Tubman with her story. There is little documentation about this il legal activity, now regarded as noble, that op erated through commitment and spontaneity, acts of courage and kindness between total strangers. After two and one-half centuries of slavery, this secret enterprise demonstrates that brutal systems and laws can be over turned from within—a people can be freed from bondage.
