Bull Performance Test, Sale Offers 63 Bulls
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) The
Department of Agriculture will offer 63
Bulls at its 30th Annual Performance Test
Bull Sale at the Penn State Ag Arena,
Centre County on March 28.
The sale starts at 11:00 and is sponsored
by the Pennsylvania Department of Agri
culture.
“Pennsylvania believes in its beef indus
try,” said Secretary Wolff. “We at the De
partment of Agriculture assist our breed
ers in their quest for genetic progress in
their herds through our Livestock Evalua
tion Center. For 30 years, the Bull Per
formance Test and Sale has provided the
opportunity for breeders looking for prov
en genetics to make genetic progress in
their herds.”
Of the 63 lots, 29 are Black Angus, 5
Red Angus, 4 Charolais, 18 Simmental, 5
Herefords, 1 Limousin, and 1 Shorthorn.
Bulls were placed on test on Oct. 29 at
the PDA Livestock Evaluation Center and
over the course of 112 days, were evaluat
ed for average weight gain, feed efficiency,
and other traits that identify genetic po
tential.
Based on the performance of the bulls,
the Livestock Evaluation Center can ob
jectively determine their hereditary poten
tial. The resulting offspring are more effi
cient and have more genetic potential for
the producer.
This year’s test results identified two
bulls with an average daily weight gain of
five pounds a day; the average for the test
was four pounds a day. Ultra-sounding
was used to evaluate the muscle and fat
gain of each bull.
All bulls in this year’s bull Performance
Test and Sale are from guaranteed breed
ers.
At the conclusion of the test, only the
highest-ranking bulls are offered for sale.
