Beef Expo Begins March 27

animals in a weekend of fun and
education.
Special educational demon
strations and exhibits will be
given on Friday and Saturday,
March 28 and 29.
Since its creation in 1988, the
Pennsylvania Beef Expo has ex
panded to include activities tar
geted at both junior and senior
cattlemen. This year’s Expo be
gins with the PCA Awards Ban
quet and Annual Meeting, sched
uled for Thursday, March 27 at
Celebrations Hall, near the Nltta
ny Mall, in State College. Festivi
ties will begin with a reception at
6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.
The association will recognize
cattle producers with several
awards including the Industry
Service Award, Commercial Cat
tleman, Seedstock Breeder and
Cattle Feeder of the Year.
One farm will be recognized
with the Stewardship Award for
dedication to preserving agricul
ture and the environment for fu
ture generations.
Other banquet highlights in
clude announcement of the Penn
sylvania Cattlemen’s Beef Am
bassadors. Banquet reservations

The Beef Expo Trade Show

PC A To Award Scholarship
STATE COLLEGE (Centre Co.) The Penn
sylvania Cattlemen’s Association (PCA) has an
nounced that a $l,OOO scholarship will be award
ed to a young person planning a career related to
the cattle industry . The scholarship will be
awarded at the PCA banquet, March 27.
Funding for this scholarship is provided
through PCA’ s previous participation in the
IVOMEC: GENERATIONS OF EXCELLENCE
TM program.
“Nothing is more important than providing a
sound education for tomorrow's producers,”
according to Terry L. Shearer, President of PCA.
“Those planning to work in the changing cat
tle industry into the next century will need to be
proficient in animal and crop sciences, business
economics, and communications. That’s why
PCA is providing a $l,OOO IVOMEC Scholarship
to help a deserving young cattleman or cattlewo
man prepare for the future.”

SKILLATHON, QUIZ BOWL
This year’s Pennsylvania Beef
Expo will again provide juniors
with an opportunity to test their
knowledge at the annual Penn
sylvania Beef Expo Skillathon
and Pennsylvania Beef Expo
Quiz Bowl.
This year’s Beef Skillathon will
be conducted Saturday, March 29
from 8 to 10 a.m. The Skillathon
allows young beef enthusiasts to
test their beef industry knowl
edge. By incorporating project
skills and industry basics in a se
ries of mini-learning stations par
ticipants compete in areas such
as identification of beef breeds,
retail cuts, feed ingredients and
feed safety. Divisions for the Skil
lathon include senior (16-21), in
termediate (12-15), and junior
(8-11).
The Beef Expo Quiz Bowl will
also take place on Friday, March
28, beginning with preliminaries
at 4 p.m. Any teams of four
PJCA, 4-H or FFA members are
invited to compete. The competi
tion will be divided into two divi
sions: 14 to 21 year olds (seniors)
and 8 to 13 year olds (juniors).
Quiz Bowl topics will include nu
trition, genetics, reproduction,
animal health, marketing and
promotion, and cattle breeds.
The Beef Skillathon and Quiz
Bowl competitions are open to all
PJCA, 4-H,
and FFA
members.
