March 10-11,2003 Report Supplied By USDA Cattle Calves Sheep Goats THIS WEEK LAST WEEK LAST YEAR Compared to Thursday's lower market, slaughter steers sold a full 100 higher for both the Monday and Tuesday run Bidding was moderately active, but any action would be con sidered active when compared to Thursday's trade The quality of the stock was about aver age, with very few high Choice and Prime steers, especially on Tuesday There was a fairly good supply on hand, as over 235 head of steers sold on Monday, with 180 head on Tuesday's books Pressure is still evident in the finished market as Apnl live cattle futures at the Merc closed down 145 points at 72 77 on Tuesday. Furthermore, the summer contracts are sitting around 6600-70.00, which is very bearish The Western feedyards are shaping up to take an other hit after last week's 77 00 market, as a few early week sales have been reported from 74 50-76 00 If that isn't enough to make you think the market might be heading lower as we look ahead to spring and summer, maybe lower boxed beef values will convince you, however, only time will tell Slaughter Holstein steers sold steady to firm in relatively active trading, with not enough slaughter heifers on offer to test the market. Slaughter cows sold fully 1.00*3.00 lower when compared to Thursday's active market Slaughter bull sold with a lower undertone as well on the light run The supply included 43 B & R CATTLE CO RD 1, Marietta PA 17547 Office Phone. 717*653*8164 Specializing in Stockers & Feeders JOHN BOWMAN 717*653*5728 RON RANCK 717*656*9849 |h Capacity 40' roof (left) lows more storage and iys cleaner than iiwentioMl 30* roof (right) rdroShield® Weather, lard prevents water im running dawn hnpper ACCESS PLUS® permits asy clean out of the bin •om the ground. Bidding fluctuated for the entirety of the mixed run, as buyers tried to get uniform loads put together The high Choice and Prime supply was nil to void, as the majori ty of the run was made up Select and Choice stock. The buzz around the bam most of the day revolved around the lower Board this sum mer; with the summer contracts trading from around 67.00-69.00. Therefore, many of the local producers that are hitting the graded feed er cattle sales held in the surrounding states are looking for lighter cattle to put in their bams that will finish late this year, or early next year. Most producers are not wilbng to roll the dice and put 8 weights on feed that will finish this summer in the ex- pected bearish mar ket But one cannot always bank on the Board, as the Western direct feedyards re corded what most would consider a vic tory as they moved the bulk of their cattle from 76.00-77.00 this week after the April live cattle contract at the Merc moved up CARLISLE LIVESTOCK 13M VI MARKET, INC.
