THIS WEEK
LAST WEEK
LAST YEAR
Compared to last week's snow shortened runs
slaughter steers sold steady to weak early in the week,
with most of the pressure on the higher quality stock
Late in the week demand picked up for the high
Choice and Prime steers as prices were a full 1 00 high
er on the long-feds Receipts were well over those of
last week's snow markets as farmers were finally able
to get out of their driveways And while this increased
surge had the mat mgs of over supplying the market
the firm demand for meat kept its head above water
Several bullish national factors could also be noted as
supportive for the local finished trade The boxes were
flying out of packers coolers this week, as the cutout
value was several dollars higher over the week The
I ebruary live cattle contract at the C ME is about to cx
pire but was very supportive this winter Everyone s
attention will now turn to the summer contracts with
the April contract currently at 76 00 with June and
August showing some bearishness as they trade in the
low to mid 60 00 range The major feeding areas in the
West moved their live steers from 79 00-80JX) this
week which is mostly steady Holstein steers sold
mostly steady to firm for the entirety of the y«e«k with
the uneven heifer supply trading near steady as well
Slaughter cows sold steady to firm for two
trading this week However, when the cow carcass
cutout value jumped 2 88 higher on Wednesday to a
level of 91 96, packers took note and added softie more
money to their already high bids It was impressive to
see the demand hold firm as Lancaster County record
ed a run that included over 525 head on Tuejdfty, and
another run on Thursday that put nearly 600 ncad in
the books, with the cow grand total coming in at 1285
head this week Slaughter bulls sold steady to weak
early with prices late in the week trending a full 1 00

CALF SUMMARY Compared to last week, slaugh
ter calves sold with a higher undertone on a light early
week run, only to trend weak to 12 00 lower from Mon
day on out Holstein bull calves going into veal barns
sold up to 20 00 higher on Monday only to trend weak
to sharply lowe~ on the heavy Tuesday run that in
cluded more than 1025 head However, demand picked
back up on the Thursday run as prices trended sharply
higher Needlcss-to-say it was a very supply and de
mand driven market this week, and still goes to show if
the calf market is over supplied, demand will falter
Holstein heifers sold mostly weaker for the entire
weak, as the heifer market never seemed to And any
support This week the PA Dept of Ag graded 1109
head in the two Lancaster County graded sales
