es 4-H and FFA leaders in agrise
minars throughout his career and
in purchasing their animal proj
ects at sales.
“The opportunity I had as a
4-H'er for 10-21 years has mold
ed me to be the leader I am
today," Boyd said.
“It’s taught me to win with hu
mility, to lose with dignity, and
the importance of being sensitive
to everyone.”
As a 4-H’er, Boyd received the
state's highest 4-H achievement
award that enabled him to repre
sent Pennsylvania at the National
4-H Congress. Even at that early
age, Boyd’s character was re
vealed in his quest for the
achievement award. He had vied
for the award three years. The
first time, he came in third; the
second time, he placed second;
and the third time, he was the
winner.
Perseverance is a characteristic
that Boyd encourages people of
all ages to aspire to.
Transferring farms from one
generation to another is difficult
for many families. Recognizing
the emotional and financial diffi
culties, Boyd cosistently spent
hours with families in helping
them work through the process.
“I believe we are put here (on
earth) not to take, but to give
back resources,” Boyd said.
He refers to both human and
natural resources. One of the re
sources Boyd in particular sought
to protect was land use. He was
instrumental in establishing
farmland preservation in the
county.
In 1987, he worked to have
state legislators approve a $lOO
million bond issue for buying per
manent development rights from
farms. Since then, 50,000 acres
have been preserved through the
county preservation and 250,000
through the state.
Dr. Ronald Hanson, left, stresses the importance of
keeping a positive focus in farm family relationships. See
next week’s issue for this and more topics addressed at
First Union’s 22nd Agri-Education Seminar at the Farm
and Home Center.
With a focus on show horse success,
Lancaster Farming's Boarder & Trainer for
March 15 includes ways to improve horse health
using a new treadmill developed at the Marion
DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center in
Leesburg, va. Also scheduled for that issue;
highlights of the Steeplechase in Leesburg, Va.,
the work of farriers, and lots more!

Years In
Boyd served as president of the
Lancaster Farmland Trust from
1992-1995. He received the
trust’s 1995 Distinquished Serv
ice Award and was named to the
state’s Agricultural Land Preser
vation Board in 1996.
“Land is an irreplaceable re
source," Boyd said of the need to
preserve agriculture’s prime
farmland.
His stance to protect the digni
ty of others is perhaps best dem
onstrated by an incident that
happened in 1987. At that time,
the Ku Klux Klan marched in
Ephrata. Boyd was instrumental
in forming a prayer vigil where
black and white stood in unity
against the divisive tactics of the
KKK.
Boyd arranged for a black
minister and choir from Lancas
ter to start an exchange with his
church to help strengthen under
standing and acceptance. That
exchange has continued after IS
years.
Boyd and his wife Linda have
three children and reside in
Akron. Another son is deceased.
Boyd’s honesty in baring his
emotional pain in dealing with
the loss of his son has enabled
him to empathize with many
other families dealing with loss.
Boyd’s caring attitude prevails
in business and personal deal
ings.
“He is a genuine caring person.
It is not a put-on,” Shaw said.
Evidence of Boyd’s concern for
individuals beyond the financial
aspect of the family farm is re
corded in the first agrifmance
seminar, which he arranged 22
years ago. The theme was, “We
Care For You And The Family
Farm.”
Throughout the successive 22
years of agrifinance seminars,
Boyd has always included seg
ments that deal with building
healthy family relationships and
emotional well-being.
Agrifinance , Boyd Retires
Boyd was named director of
agrifinance in 1977. During his
tenure with the bank, which went
through numerous mergers, the
agrifinance department grew
from a small customer base to
$l3 million in loans and 900 cus
tomers.
First Union leads in commer
cial bank lending to agriculture
in the state. Boyd does not look
at other lending institutions as
competition. He said. “We are
here to help each other. Anyone
helping agriculture is a friend of
mine.”

Other highlights in Boyd’s ca
reer include serving as chairman
of the Agriculture and Rural De
velopment Committee of the
American Bankers Association in
Washington, D.C. for the
1997-1998 term, and chairing the
National Agriculture Bankers
Conference in Milwaukee in
1997. Boyd is the only Pennsylva
nian to chair the national organi
zation in its 50-year history.
In 1998, Boyd received the
George Delp Award. And in Jan
uary of this year, Boyd accepted
Pennsylvania’s most prestigious
Phone 226-1918
agricultural award for First
Union Bank’s promotion and ad
vancement of agriculture at the
Agro 2003 Farm Show /
International dinner in Harris
burg.
At 61 years of age, Boyd said
that he does not have plans for
what he will do after retirement.
Boyd's last day with First
Union is March 31.
“I will give my job 110 percent
until then. After that, I'll think
about the future,” he said.
