Lebanon Teen Wins DENVER, Colo. Margeaux Firestine, Womelsdorf, Pennsyl vania was crowned the National Polled Hereford Queen during the National Polled Hereford Show at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado on January 24. She was given the title during the recent National Hereford Show conducted in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., Jan. 18. In the Fall of 2003 she p!ans to attend Loyola College ard major in biology. Her future plans are to become a pediatric cardiologist and raise Hereford cattle on a farm of her own. Margeaux is very active in the Pennsylvania Junior Hereford Association. She held the office of Cattle Producers Call For Permanent Repeal Of Death Tax WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. cattle producers continue to urge the importance of permanent repeal of the Death Tax. In the House, the Death Tax Permanency Act of 2003, (H.R.57), which calls for permanent repeal, was introduced recently by Rep. Jennifer Dunn (WA-8). The bill was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means. So far, 131 members are now cosponsors of the bill. Similar legislation in the Senate, Permanent Death Tax Repeal Act of 2003 (5.169), was introduced by Sen. John Kyi (AZ) and has been referred to the Com mittee on Finance. “With 131 co-sponsors, and more signing on all the time, we are looking forward to a vote on this legislation in the House, as well as in the Senate,” says Jay Truitt, executive director of legisla tive affairs for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). Margeaux has a man ageable 20 head of cattle in her herd of Herefords, many of which have won grand champi on, besides two supreme champi on titles. In 2001 she was honored with the title by the American Here- i ford Association, “Northeast Show Heifer of the Year.” At school she is a member of Key Club, Student Council, Drama Club, musical, Spanish Club, and chorus. She was also a HOBY ambassador and is a member of National Honors So ciety. In the ag department at Conrad Weiser High School she is a Teaching Laboratory Assist ant. In 2000 Margeaux began com peting in speech contests. She was awarded second in the state for junior prepared speaking con test. In 2002 she was first in the state senior prepared speaking contest and went on to the na tional in Louisville, Kentucky and won a silver medal for her accomplishments. She was also first at the East ern States FFA competition. In 2000 she won the National Organization of Poll-Ettes Na tional Illustrated Speech Contest, in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the junior national. In 2001 she was third in the il lustrated speech contest at Bill ings, Montana. She was second at the PRIDE convention in Kansas City, Mo. During 2002 she placed second at the Junior National Illustrated Speech contest. During Margeaux’s reign as queen she will represent the Hereford breed at shows, sales, and other events. She will serve as a spokesperson to the public on important issues and breed history as well. Margeaux will also promote Certified Hereford Beef as a healthy product to con sumes. The National Polled Hereford Queen contest is in its 29th year of honoring young ladies with scholarships and offering them the chance to travel and serve as a spokesperson for the Hereford industry. Jennifer is the 19-year-old daughter of Chris and Lynne Oglesby of Wadley, Ga. She is a sophomore at Geor gia College and State University where she is studying to become a nurse. Margeaux’s responsibility as queen will depend on a consider able amount of traveling.
