Compared to Thursday, the bulk of the
average Choice and Select steers sold
fully steady. There was some weakness
noted in the high Choice and Prime stock,
as buyers never seemed to pour into the
fancier-types. All of the cards were
stacked in the sellers favor on Tuesday, as
the Board closed at 81.65 for the February
live cattle contract on Monday. Also,
packers were definitely moving some
boxes early in the week, as the boxed beef
cutout was from around 1.50 to 1.80 high
er on Monday. Even with the supportive

factors, the early week runs failed to
break steady. Bidding on the fed steer
supply ranged from moderate to some
what active at times; and was very de
pendant upon the quality and the fill.
Holstein steers sold mostly steady on a
fairly light test. Slaughter heifers were
also in short supply and trended near
steady. Breaking and Boning slaughter
cows sold steady to instances weaker,
with the Lean cow supply trending steady
to firm. Buyer attendance was normal,
with bidding lighter on the fleshy cows,
and more active on the lean supply. It
was very impressive that prices held
steady when considering the run included
S2S cows. Slaughter bulls sold steady on a
light test. The supply included 29 percent
steers, 8 percent heifers, 54 percent cows,
4 percent bulls, with the balance feeder
cattle.

CALVES; Compared to last Tuesday,
slaughter calves sold steady to 5.00 lower.
Holstein bull calves going into veal bams
sold weak to mostly sharply lower. How
ever, remember there were only 425
calves in the entire sale last week, and
when comparing the 1025 we saw this
week it makes for a pretty light test. Hol
stein heifers sold weaker as well under the
same circumstances. The supply included
753 in the state graded sale, with around
89 percent of the graded supply returning
to feed.

Compared to Tuesday, the bulk of the
Select and Choice steers sold steady to
firm; with the fancier high Choice and
Prime steers trading up to a full 1.00
higher. Trade activity was very mixed
throughout the sale on all grades, which
also made for some wide price spreads
within each grade (note the average prices
for each grade in the prices quoted
below). The Merc and the boxed trade
have both been farmer-friendly all week.
The February live cattle contract closed at
80.62 on Thursday which is down from
the prior day but still somewhat support
ive as the month comes to a close. Now all
eyes turn to the April contract which does
not provide as much support at its cur
rent level of 76.00, especially with the
summer months trading in the mid to
upper 60.00 range. However, we all know
how quickly those levels can adjust to the
cash trade. On the meat side, cutout val
ues are currently from around
122.00-129.00; which is much higher than
last week's values. Slaughter Holsteins
sold steady to firm on a moderate supply.
There were a few slaughter heifers on
offer, but the finished was too mixed to
compare to the early week run. Slaughter
cows sold a full 1.00-1.50 higher on a very
large run that included well over 550
head. There was an especially good sup
ply of big fleshy cows (less than 85 per
cent lean) which drew very good buyer at
tention. The cow carcass cutout value was
at 91.96 on Wednesday, which is 2.88
higher; and buyers made it clear on
Thursday that their plants are moving
meat as they added some money to their
already high bids. The few slaughter bulls
that were comparable to the light early
week test sold a full 1.00 higher, with the
rest of Thursday's run trending sharply
higher. The reported supply included 43
percent steers, 6 percent heifers, 42 per
cent cows, 4 percent bulls, with the bal
ance feeder cattle.
