NCGA Encouraged
By Introduction Of
RES Legislation
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Leaders of the National Corn
Growers Association (NCGA)
said they were encouraged by the
introduction of a renewable fuels
standard (RFS) bill in the Senate.
“Passing a national RFS this
year is NCGA’s top legislative
priority,” said NCGA President
Fred Yoder,
The bipartisan legislation, in
troduced today by Sen. Tom
Daschle, D-SD, includes a sched
uled required use of ethanol in
the nation’s motor fuel supply
that gradually increases over the
next eight years. According to the
schedule, a required use of 2.3
billion gallons of ethanol is set for
next year. By 2012 the require-
ment would be at 5 bil
lion gallons.
“These numbers,
appropriated two
years ago. do not re
flect the tremendous
growth in ethanol pro
duction." said Yoder.
“NCGA will work
with the Senate to in
crease the gallon re
quirement, particular
ly in the early years of
the program.
NCGA advocates a
national RFS because
it would provide a
stable demand for the
use of ethanol, while
reducing the nation’s
dependence on foreign
oil.
“It is an important
and timely piece of
legislation,” concluded
Yoder. “With tensions
swelling in Iraq, we
need to focus on
means for the United
States to become more
of an independent fuel
producer.”
The key provisions
of the bill are identical
to RFS legislation in
troduced in the 107th
Congress. That mea
sure, included in the
Senate energy bill, sur
vived three amend
ments to strike it but
died when Congress
adjourned.
