The Berks/Southeast Cattlemen’s
Association and Penn State Co
operative Extension recently con
ducted their annual
Beef Educational Eve
ning at the Bemville
Grange.
After dinner pro
vided by the members
of the Bemville
Grange, Cattlemen’s
Association President
Robert Adam wel
comed those present
and provided informa
tion about the associa
tion activities. Presently
there are 41 members
families and seven jun
ior members. Member
ship can be either for
only the Berks/
Southeast Cattlemen’s
Association or include
membership in the
Pennsylvania Cattle
men’s Association

association has two ob
jectives—first is to

recent tour of Excel (Taylor
Packing). Their second objective
is to help their youth by provid
ing trophies and awards at vari
ous fairs and shows and sponsor
ing two or three youth each year
to a beef camp in Virginia.

Evening the association honors
the youth beef winners in both
market and breeding of sur
rounding counties. Those able to
attend this year just happened to
be the youth that exhibited the
champion female for their coun
ty. The champion females for
each were registered Herefords as

the New York State Fair, cham
pion Hereford at the Maryland
State Fair, supreme champion of
York Fair and reserve champion
at Eastern Nationals. The dam of
Firestine’s champion female, also
a bred-and-owned, had also gath
ered championship honors for
her.
Firestine is a senior at Conrad
Weiser High School and has been
accepted to Loyola College in
Baltimore, Md. where she will be
a biology major in the pre-med
program.

She has shown her Hereford
cattle at approximately 13 shows
this past year on the local, state,
and national levels. She currently
owns 15 of the 30-35 head on the
farm—this total does not include
the current crop of calves. Fire
stine had the honor of being
named the National Polled Here
ford Queen while in Denver, Col
orado this past January while at
the National Polled Hereford
Show.

Emilie Miller, 17, daughter of
Mike and Sheila Miller of Wo
melsdorf. Miller also had the re
serve market steer project for
Berks county. A senior at Tulpe
hocken High School she has
been accepted at both Kan
sas and Oklahoma Univer
sities in the honors pro
gram. Her major will lead
her to a masters degree in
Genetic Engineering.
This being Miller’s last
year of 4-H showing she
regularly exhibits her ani
mals at shows throughout
the country and was recent
ly elected to the National
Hereford Junior Board of
Directors.
