NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER
SUMMARY for week ending Feb. 21
Total Receipts: 333,700; last week
300,100. Direct 46.100; last week 41.700.
Video/Intemet 38.000; last week 1,300.
Auctions 249,600; last week 257,100. This
week’s reported auction volume included
53 percent over 600 lbs and 43 percent
heifers.
Compared to last week, yearling feeder
steers and heifers sold steady to 2.00
lower with the exception of the available
lightweight yearlings weighing right
around 600 lbs, which traded fully steady
to slightly higher. These two-way cattle
allow buyers the flexibility of going to
graze-out wheat, short-term grass, or
straight to the feediot. Also, a six-weight
feeder won't hit the finished market until
fall, when most folks expect the fat mar
ket to rebound from summer lows. How
ever, not everyone is sold on the idea that
slaughter cattle prices are headed for the
cellar.
Feedlots are getting downright cocky
with their current marketing situation.
Showlists have been green all winter and
cattle performance has been out of this
world, which has many cattle feeders be
lieving that they can fight off this sum
mers bearishness. August Live Cattle
CME futures are trading in the 67.00
range, which would be a steep nosedive
from this week’s 80.00 market. The Board
is definitely not helping the market for
this year’s wheat run, which started this
week as salebarns in Texas, Oklahoma,
and Kansas saw their first significant
numbers of cattle coming off winter
wheat pasture. Most of these feeders are
fleshy and tipping the scales more than
expected. Initial demand is only moderate
for these types, but the interest in light
weight Stockers is very good. Calf prices
were steady to 2.00 higher on limited sup
plies.
Receipts in the Southeast continue to
run well below normal and this was espe
cially the case from Tennessee across to
Virginia this week, where heavy snow
brought livestock movement to a halt.
This winters snowfall in the eastern re
gions of the US is approaching all-time
record levels, while areas m the Midwest
and Northern Plains continue to suffer in
drought.
