Sheep ELVERSON (Chester Co.) If you have sheep and/or are in terested in learning more about sheep production and manage ment, this course will provide the essentials plus experiences/ expertise of other sheep produc ers. Through a combination of lec tures, demonstrations, hands-on learning experiences, a farm visit and a producer panel discussion, you will acquire the basics of sheep production and manage ment. Sessions will be conducted in the agriculture department of the Twin Valley High School on Rt. 23 east of Morgantown. The farm visit will be conducted on the Brubaker farm, south of Robeso nia, Berks County. Fee for the course is $3O per person and $4O per couple. This fee will cover printed materials, course costs, and refreshments. A Management Short Course Set couple will receive one notebook and one set of handouts. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Only individu als with the first 25 paid enroll ment forms received will be ac cepted. If more than 25 individuals register, we will ask couples to send only one from their family. Send the enclosed registration form with your check made pay able to Berks County Ext. Special Account. Program Participants •Roger Bowman. A sheep pro ducer for 29 years, his present flock has 35 reg istered Dorsets and Cor riedales. Wool produc tion is emphasized because Bow man has exhibited wool in local fairs and at the Farm Show. The farm consists of 25 acres of pps tureland. He is vice president of Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 22, 2003-A39 the Berks County Sheep and Wool Growers and has been a 4-H sheep club leader for many years. •Clyde Brubaker and Tim Fleener. Owners of Blue Acre Farm, Brubaker and his family have raised sheep since 1959. Today, with help from the entire family and especially son-in-law Tim Fleener, the flock consists of 90 ewes of which 40 are purebred Hampshires. The farm consists of 60 acres of which 40 are used for grazing. •Cheryl Fairbaim. An exten sion agent for 24 years in Chester County, Fairbaim conducts pro grams for the livestock, horse, crop, and forage producers. She also manages the 4-H livestock and horse programs. •Rod Gilbert. Gilbert is an as sistant Professor of animal sci ence at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown. He has been with DVC for 30 years. Gilbert manages the beef, sheep, and swine op erations at DVC. The flock consists of Hamp shires, Dor- set, and commercial breeding ewes. •Robert Holmes. The Holmes family runs 150 commercial ewes using the Star system of acceler ated lambing. The family also uses intensive grazing and green houses for lambing. •Annette Lovell. Lovell is a Penn State graduate who is the shepherd for Hollystone Farms in Paoli. They run 100 purebred Dorset ewes and utilize an inten sive grazing system. They have been very successful in the show ring and sell breeding stock to other producers. •Clyde Myers. An extension agent in Berks County for 25 years, Myers’ responsibilities in clude dairy and other farm ani mals, home and farm water sys tems, land preservation, and agriculture public relations. •Dr. Aliza Simeone. A veteri narian with Brandywine Veteri nary Services in Coatesville, Sim eone is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and specializes in small rumi nants. She works with a number of sheep and goat producers in Chester County.
