Compared to Thursday, slaughter
steers sold with a weaker undertone. Cat
tle were weighing up pretty full, and the
quality was below normal; however, bids
did have a little Are on them considering
the mixed run. Slaughter Holsteins and
heifers were not tested due to the reduced
receipts. Slaughter cows sold with a
firmer undertone although the supply
only included around 135 head; which is
well below normal. Slaughter bulls were
not tested. Needless to say, the blizzard of
2003 took its toll on the early week run; as
numbers were greatly reduced as farmers
continue to dig themselves out. The sup
ply included 53 percent steers, 1 percent
heifers, 46 percent cows, 1 percent bulls,
with no feeders. Note: Price quotes and
market trends are available for Tuesday
only, as a sale was not held on Monday
due to the weather.

LAST YEAR
Due to the light early week supply, a trend
was unable to be established. However, there
was definitely some fire back under the fat cat
tle market at Thursday's sale, and a higher un
dertone was noted; and would even be an un
derstatement at times. The quality of the supply
continues to run pretty mixed, but buyers were
able to put together some nice loads despite the
fluctuation. Bidding was only moderate to kick
off the sale, although active once the good stock
started coming through the door. Feed yards
out West accepted 79.00-80.00 for their cattle
Thursday, which is 1.00-2.00 higher than last
week. The Merc also posted gains in the live
cattle pits Thursday, as the February contract
once again poked its head above 80.00; to offi
cially close up 82.50 cents at 80.67. Both of the
above items are very farmer-friendly as the fin
ished market seems to once again have a bullish
tone to it. Slaughter Holsteins and heifers were
in very light supply early in the week, therefore
a trend was not established late. However, a
higher undertone was noted on both classes.
Slaughter cows sold firm to .50 higher, with in
stances of 1.00 higher when compared to the
very light early week test. Cow bids were sup
ported by a bullish meat market, as cutout val
ues were 1.70 higher on Wednesday. It is worth
noting the cow supply topped over 635 head,
with demand very good when taking the large
supply in consideration. Slaughter bulls sold
sharply higher on a fancy run The reported
supply included 34 percent steers, 5 percent
heifers, 54 percent cows, 4 percent bulls, with
the balance feeder cattle.
