National Feeder Cattle Weekly Review St. Joseph, Mo. February 14,2003 Report Supplied By USDA NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER SUMMARY for week ending Feb. 14 Total Receipts: 300,100; last week 457,200. Direct 41,700; last week 63,600. Video/lntemet 1,300; last week 66,700. Auctions 257,100; last week 261,400. This weeks reported auction volume included S 3 percent over 600 lbs and 46 percent heifers. Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold weak to 3.00 lower on much lighter receipts. Pressure carried over from late last week and was intensifi ed by sharp losses on the futures board early this week. Feedlots failed to move this week's showlists and the few yards that did sell were forced to accept 3.00 less on a live basis at 79.00, dressed sales were 3.00- 4.00 lower from 122.00-123.00. Fears of terrorism and war weighed on cattle mar kets this week as alert warnings were raised and the signals of homeland de fense became more evident. Our old foe, Bin Laden, reared his ugly head again this week in some well-publicized videos. This caused Americans to stop and won der what if, which quickly affected com modity markets. Gas prices seem destined for 2.00 a gallon and panic is starting to set-in. All these bearish factors took their toll on feeder cattle markets across the country. Now, let’s talk about the bulls that are pacing the weak part of the fence with their ears and tails held high. Packers have failed to completely satisfy their needs for the last few weeks and most feedlots remain comfortably current, es pecially in the Southern Plains where some feedlots are nearly a month ahead of a regular marketing schedule. Showlists have been green for weeks and a few sessions of limited sales will only get most feeders back on track. Fri days cattle-on-feed report quoted market ings at only 95 percent of last years, but 4 I 4 it Saturday, February 22, 2003-Al5 Lancaster Farming, NOTICE Float System Greenhouse Taking orders for type 609 and 41 greenhouse plants. Benj S. Miller 2019 Smyrna Rd. Paradise, PA 17562 this may be the result of 8 percent less cattle being on feed. January placements were pegged at 98 percent of 2002, but empty pens are available and a little en- couragement should cause cattle feeders to purchase 700 lbs of bovine for the same price per unit that they are receiving for 1200 lbs. Many buyers are passing-up to- days feeders on the expectation of a stam- pede of wheat cattle in early March. Maybe they are out there, you just cant see them from the road.
