Pennsylvania 4-H Members Win
National Egg & Poultry Awards
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) Pennsylvania youths
fared well in egg-judging and
poultry knowledge competitions
at the recent National 4-H Poul
try and Egg Conference in Louis
ville, Ky.
Maria Sanner of Somerset
County won first place in the Na
tional 4-H Egg Cookery Presen
tation Contest, which involved
preparing an egg dish and giving
an oral presentation on egg quali
ty standards, preparation, versa
tility and nutritional value. The
win was the first for a Pennsylva
nia 4-H member at a national
poultry competition. Somerset
County 4-H volunteer leader
Theresa Sanner served as chaper
one and coach.
A Pennsylvania team also
placed seventh in the double
elimination National Avian Bowl
Contest. The team included
Cony Calderone, Jill McClure
and Rebecca Stottlemyer, all
from Washington County, and
was coached by Washington
County 4-H volunteer leaders
Jenna Dunmire and Mary Fidler.
The national conference
brought together more than 150
senior 4-H members from 25
states for team competitions in
poultry and egg judging and in
the Avian Bowl poultry knowl
edge contest. In addition, individ
ual?--competed in egg prepara
tion, turkey barbecuing and
chicken barbecuing events.

New Horse & Pony Club
Forming In Northampton Co.
The Bndle Bunch, a new 4-H
Horse and Pony Club is forming
in Williams Township, North
ampton County. Youth, ages
8-18 are welcome to join for a
maximum of 10 members.
It is not necessary to own a
horse to be a member just love
for horses and ponies and an in
terest in learning about them are
required.
The first meeting was sched
uled for Friday, Jan. 24. Future
meetings will be on the second
and fourth Friday of every
month. Crafts, demonstrations,
visiting speakers, trips to
horseshows, hiking, camping, etc.

Cumberland Co. 4-H
Selling Bonus Books
The Cumberland County 4-H
clubs are selling bonus books this
year to raise money to support
4-H. Instead of selling cookies
this year they will be selling
bonus books until April.
Most of the coupons in these
books are from businesses in or
around the Carlisle area (94 in
Carlisle alone). Five dollars to
$ll per book comes back to the
4-H, depending on how many
books are sold.
Profits from the Bonus Book
sale will support the county 4-H
Development Fund and local 4-H
clubs. The 4-H Development
Fund helps to pay transportation
costs, at least half of 4-H event
registration fees and achievement
night awards, as well as support
for adult volunteer training, and
much more.
The books cost $25. These cou
pons are good from the date of
purchase until December 31,

Offers 4-H Tractor
Safety Course
MONTOURSVILLE (Lycom
ing Co.) Farming is a way of
life for many Pennsylvanians.
Too often it is also a way of death
or injury as well. Any girl or boy,
14 or 15 years of age, must suc
cessfully complete proper certifi
cation if they plan to operate a
farm tractor or machinery on a
farm other than their own family
farm.
A certification course is begin
ning March 11 from 6-8 p.m. and
will be conducted at Valley Ag
and Turf in Watsontown. The
course is scheduled for Tuesday

The annual Tack Swap at the
Northampton County 4-H Center
is scheduled for Saturday, April
12, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The
Northampton County 4-H Center
is located on Bushkill Center Rd.,
Nazareth, PA.
The tack swap is open to any
one who wishes to come to sell or
to buy a wide variety of horse re
lated items, apparel and tack. All
sellers must have a table area, no
consignment items will be sold at
the tack swap.

public at a cost of $l5 per table

pole barn
