Ohio Scientists Promote Animal Nutrition South Of The Border
WOOSTER, Ohio—Three animal sciences pro
fessors with the Ohio Agricultural Research and
Development Center (OARDC) have made a differ
ence for people in the Latin American food-animal
industry.
For the past eight years, Bill Weiss, Jeff Firkins,
and Don Mahan have taught courses on dairy cattle
and swine nutrition at the Escuela Centroameri
cana de Ganaderia (EC AG), a livestock production
technical institute based in the rural community of
Atenas, Costa Rica.
“These courses have exposed Latin American
professionals to the latest animal production tech
niques,” said Francisco Romero, ECAG general di
rector. “The instructors have shown the highest
level of knowledge and experience and have pro
vided us with very useful tools that can be applied to
production in the tropics.”

The yearly, one-week courses taught by Weiss,
Firkins and Mahan are organized by the Latin
American Nutrition Center for Continuing Educa
tion (LANCE), an initiative of the American Soy
bean Association funded through the USDA’s
Foreign Agriculture Service.
“My experience with the people who attend the
course has been excellent,” said Mahan, who
teaches about swine nutrition and management
practices. “They are highly motivated and eager to
learn. They are also very friendly, intelligent and
easy to get to know.”
