National Slaughter Cattle Summary -
Week Ending Feb. 7, 2003: Slaughter
cattle sold 2.00-2.50 higher on a live basis
and 3.75 higher dressed basis. Demand
very good with trade underway again as
early as Tuesday. Packers were unde
terred in their quest for numbers by
lower futures prices and an improved yet
deficient current cut-out value. Packer
margins appear to be solidly in the red
which would indicate higher cut-outs are
on the way. Clearance appears good in
Texas and fairly good in Kansas. Nebras
ka feeders holding back some as market
is sub par to southern neighbors. Boxed
beef prices closed Friday a.m. at an aver
age of 127.20 up 2.93 for the week. Sales
of slaughter cattle on a national basis for
negotiated cash trades totaled 169,700
through 10d)0 a.m. Friday. Last week’s
full count was 211,100.
