Week Ending Jan 31, 2003. Slaughter
cattle sold steady to 1.00 higher this
week, despite the downward spiral of the
boxed beef trade. Packers still faced with
short numbers came into the market
early with just a bit more money. Clear
ance good already this week as feeders
taking advantage of the improved mar
ket. Boxed beef prices on Friday aver
aged 124.36 down 4.34 from last week.
Sales of slaughter cattle on a national
basis for negotiated cash trades totaled
223,600 through 10:00 a.m. Friday. Last
week’s full count was 155,700.
STEERS AND HEIFERS: Midwest
Direct Markets: Live Basis: 35-80 per
cent Choice, 900-1400 lbs 78.00-80.00,
wtd avg 79.00. Dressed Basis: Steers and
Heifers 35-80 percent Choice, 550-950
lbs. 122.00-126.00, wtd avg 123.60. High
Plains Direct Markets: Live Basis: 35-65
percent Choice, 900-1400 lbs few

SLAUGHTER COWS AND BULLS
(Average Yielding): Slaughter cows and
bulls 1.00-3.00 higher, except southeast
up to 5.00 higher. Demand very good for
cows. USDA’s Cutter cow carcass cut
out value closed Thursday at 90.82 down
.09 cents from last Friday.

Report (includes lambs sold in IL., IN.,
OH., MI.) —Compared to last week,
slaughter lambs were mostly 1.00 to 4.00
higher. Lambs under 80 lbs were sharply
higher. Ewes were weak to 2.00 lower.
Goats were 3.00-5.00 lower. Demand was
moderate. Trading was slow. Lamb prices
were stronger ahead of the upcoming
Muslim holiday. Carlot lamb carcass were
mostly 1.00-4.00 lower. Confirmed sales
this week about 69% slaughter lambs,
31% ewes and an additional 599 head of
goats. Total sheep and lambs sales 800,
last week 600 and year ago 1050.

Weekly Meat Production Under Federal Inspection
WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 31 - (USDA-NASS) - Total red meat
production under federal inspection for the week ending Saturday, Feb. 2,
was estimated at 894.0 million lbs., according to the USDA's
Agricultural Marketing Service. This was 0.4% lower than a week ago
and 3.1% higher than a year ago. Cumulative meal production for the
year to date was 1 9% lower compared to the previous year.
