BLUE BALL (Lancaster Co.) Dairy One is conducting a
series of meetings around the state to update dairy farm
ers on changes to herd recordkeeping since last year’s
merger with Pennsylvania DHIA. The meeting on Thursday
at Shady Maple Restaurant also included award presenta
tions to Dairy One members from Lancaster and Chester

Compared to last week, slaughter steers sold 50-1 00
lower to kick of the week, trading 50-1 00 higher late
m the week on a better quality run The February live
cattle contract at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange
dropped into the 7900 category early in the week,
which took a little wind out of the sales However, the
contract was up-thc-limit on Wednesday, with another
bullish day Thursday allowing the contract to close at
82 05 The current level is extremely feeder supportive,
as we head into February in only a day The Western
direct feed yards responded lightly to the bullish Merc
as they moved steers from 79 00-80.00 on Thursday,
which is steady to 1 00 higher when compared to last
week Slaughter heifers were not well tested due to the
light numbers early in the week, although, prices
trended firmer late in the week on an increase in num
bers and quality Holstein steers sold firm to 1 00 high
er, as the numbers continue to pick up speed The qual
ity has also improved greatly over the past few weeks
Slaughter cows sold 1 00-4 00 higher this week as buy
ers remain very aggressive, even when the runs are in
the 400- 7 00 head range in a single day Slaughter bulls
continue to feed of the cow market, as prices were
firmer to 2 00 higher This week's reported supply in
cluded 37 percent steers, 6 percent heifers, 45 percent
cows, 5 percent bulls, with the balance feeders
