LAST WEEK
LAST YEAR
Compared to Thursday, slaughter steers sold
fully .50-1.00 town, Monday's supply included
a heavy supply of over-fed cattle that weighed
well over 1500 lbs. Tuesday's run included some
heavies as well, but most weighed over 1500 lbs
because of their fill. Bidding remains moderate
to firm on all grades, as there seems to be an
outlet for them all. The February live cattle con
tract at the CME has slipped back into the
79.00 category, although even at that level it re
mains supportive. Boxed beef cutout values in
dicate that the current market may have
reached its peak for the time being, as the cut
out was 1.00 to nearly 2.00 lower on Monday. A
light, but fancy, test of Holstein steers sold
steady to firm. There were not enough slaughter
heifers on hand to test the market Slaughter
cows continue to trade very well, as prices
trended steady to 1.00 higher. The recent in
crease in the cow market began on Thursday of
last week, and since then buyers continue to
throw gas on it. Slaughter bulls are being sup
ported in part due to the hot cow market, and a
light test trended with a firmer undertone. The
supply included 52 percent steers, 6 percent
heifers, 40 percent cows, 1 percent bulls, with
the balance feeders.
Note: There will be a special feeder sale after
Monday's fat cattle auction on February 3rd.

CMF dosed up-the-limit on Wednesday which was
very farmer supportive, and by the end of the sale
Thursday the contract had closed at over 82 00, which
is extremely bullish Thu Is a major adjustment as we
head Into February in a couple of days. This puts the
winter contract back at a 2 00 premium to (he Western
fat cattle market, which was moving steers from
79.00*80.00 as of Thursday night The only thing that
is not on the fast track right now is boxed beef, which
has been inching lower all week A nice supply of Hol
stein steers sold steady to 100 higher Slaughter heifers
sold with a higher undertone, although they were not
well tested due to Tuesdays thin run Slaughter cows
continue to trade higher, as prices were another

sive that buyers had nearly 700 head to choose from,
and prices were still greatly improved Slaughter bulls
