NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER
SUMMARY for week ending Jan. 24
Total Receipts: 463,400, last week
500,700. Direct 48,100, last week 49,800.
Video/Internet 124,100, last week 47,200.
Auctions 291,200, last week 403,700. This
week’s reported auction volume included
50 percent over 600 Ibs and 44 percent
heifers.
Compared to last week, feeder steers
and heifers sold steady to 2.00 lower.
Downside pressure carried over from last
week but demand was much improved
and the market was fairly stable. Last
week’s friendly cattle-on-feed report lent
support to this week’s prices as notions of
healthy feedlot marketings were confirm
ed. However, most yearling markets post
ed losses as the futures board was erratic
and feedlots were forced to take less
money for their showlists.

The fat cattle market could only hold
the 80.00 level for one trading session as
dressed beef sales slowed this week and
packers dug-in their heels. Slaughter
steers and heifers ended the week at
mostly 79.00 live and 121.00-123.00 dress
ed, which was 1.00 lower and 2.00-3.00
lower in the beef.
Stocker calves traded unevenly steady
this week, especially in the Southeast
where frigid temperatures and inclement
conditions affected marketing. Some calf
sales from Missouri across to Tennessee
were reported as much as 3.00 higher as
receipts were lighter and the cold weather
had calves looking thinner and more app
ealing to buyers.
Much of the Midwest and Northern
Plains endured temperatures that hovered
around zero degrees this week and daily
highs were only in the single digits. This
will considerably slow feedlot gains, but
most heartland feeders will tell you that
so far this has been the best cattle feeding
winter they’ve seen in years.
