als used. During the first quarter
of the 19th century, in keeping
with the patriotic fervor of the
time, eagles of ivory and wood
topped the walking sticks.
The most expensive examples
featured gold eagles with ruby
eyes.
After the Civil War it was pop
ular to make canes from pieces of
historic places or things, such as
wood from a ship or fort. The
cane would then be inscribed
with the place of origin and date.

Antler handles were among the
most common type of walking
sticks from 1870 to 1900. The
“country gentleman” walking
stick, an innovation, was rustic
and often of thorny briar. The
handles were unadorned or cov
ered with lizard skin.
The fancier versions sported
silver end caps.

the simplicity of beautiful wood
was set off with a gold or silver
monogrammed ring.
By the early 20th century there
were novelty canes that did ev
erything from dispensing coins to
unfolding into a camera tripod.
During Prohibition, a real winner
was the cane that held a liquor
flask.
In a special category are folk
art canes and walking sticks,
made in the late 19th to early
20th century. The decoration
may be a carving in the wood,
enhanced with colored paints
or ink. Appealing to collec-
tors are those with sculptures ap
plied. The serpent is probably the
most common motif. Sometimes
the head forms the top of the
walking stick or cane. Othertimes
the cane is carved to twist and
turn like a snake.
Serpent canes and walking
sticks have long been reproduced
and it is hard to tell old from
new. Another problem is few folk
art canes are dated.
A group of canes and walking sticks range from carved
ivory to folk art styles. Photo credit: James Julia Auctioneers,
