THE ANTIQUE
DETECTIVE
Canes, Walking Sticks
Can Be Valuable
Is your grandfather’s cane a family heirloom?
You may be surprised to learn that some
canes and walking sticks are considered collecti
ble antiques and often a unique art form. Prices
at auction can go from several hundred to more
than $2,000. There is a growing collectors mar
ket for rare, old, and unusual examples, and
more dealers specialize in them. And, once again
walking sticks are fashionable.
Their function may have changed over the
centuries from utilitarian to a fashionable, status
symbol. Even a weapon. The fact that swords
and guns were contained inside the shafts of
canes as late as the 1900 s tell you something
about the times.
Even a shillelagh of heavy knarled oak can be
intimidating.
Ivory handles were among the most popular
tops for canes, as were those made of gold, sil
ver, horn and carved wood. The ivory handles
usually were of a bulbous mushroom shape.
When carved the heads of animals and ducks
were among the most popular. When handles
were made from antlers they were combined
with monogrammed silver or brass panels.
Shafts were made of oak, rosewood, ebony and
malacca. The rattan shafts often were topped
with carved ivory figures. Female heads are rare
however full length figures of women were often
carved in unflattering or explicit poses.
After the American Revolution it was fashion
able for men to carry a walking stick with a
sword inside.
