THIS WEEK
LAST WEEK
LAST YEAR
Compared to last week, slaughter steers sold fully
1 00 higher to open the trading period, only to trend
fully 50*100 lower to close it out The quality of the
supply this week fluctuated more than usual, and with
the various finish came mixed buyer activity It was
pretty simple though, if they had the right finish and
they were the right weight, they went in the 80 00 pen
The Western direct feed yards moved the bulk of their
steers at mostly 80 00 this week, which is 2.00 higher
than the previous trading period Luckily, the Western
feeders were able to get it done before news broke that
several vials of bubonic plague were misting from a
college lab This news caused the Board to crash on
Wednesday, with near limit down losses in all livestock
pits However, even a plague scare cannot slow the red
meat train down as boxed beef cutout values continue
to sky rocket, with gains from 6 00 to over 7 00 this
week Holstein steers sold with a firmer undertone this
week, although the supply remains light Well-finished
also address topics as varied as
compost, crop rotation, culinary
herbs, and conserving water on
farm.
This year features several pre
sentations for farmers consid
ering converting to organic prac
tices and information for those
who are new to production agri
culture. In the morning, Olga
Wickerhauser, the new 'NJAES
sustainable agriculture coordina
tor, will cover “Fundamentals of
Sustainable Organic Agricul
ture,” and Phil Metzger, project
coordinator for the. Central New
York Resource Conservation and
Development board and a trainee
in the Allan Savory Center’s Hol
istic Management Certified Edu
cator program will offer an “In
troduction to Holistic
Management,” an integrated
planning process that emphases
organizing land-based enterprises
to be profitable and environ
mentally and socially sound.

1100 cows went through the Lancaster county sale
bams Slaughter bulls sold mostly steady to 3 00 lower

CALF SUMMARY Compared to last week, slaugh
ter calves sold firm to 1000 higher Slaughter buyers
are not able to procure calves near as effortlessly as ac
customed to as several feeders are showing interest in
owning the Utility calves Holstein bull calves suitable
for special fed veal barns sold sharply higher this week
Buyer demand, attendance, and activity were all excel
lent for the entirety of the week However, many pro
ducers are trying to pencil out paying 140 00-170 00 for
90-125 lb calves when the finished market is only
185 00 Holstein heifers also sold sharply higher this
week, as bids are above 500 00 for the fancy stock The
state graded runs in Lancaster County remain fairly
strong as nearly 1000 head were sold through the two
graded sales this week

edge of the state remain in
drought watch, Secretary Hess
said. They are Beaver, Crawford,
Erie, Greene, Lawrence, Mercer
and Washington.
“e have been in a real drought
buster of a weather pattern in
southcentral and southeastern
Pennsylvania for about the past
eight weeks or so,” Secretary
Hess said.
“The snow we received in late
November, December and Janu
ary has been especially helpful
because the slow melting of snow
is excellent for recharg
ing groundwater. The
weather so far this win
ter, when it comes to
precipitation, is just
about the opposite of
last year when the win
ter months were so dry.”
Gov. Schweiker first
declared a drought
emergency for 24 coun
ties in southcentral and
southeastern Pennsylva
nia on Feb. 12,2002.
Of the state’s 67 coun
ties, only a dozen es
caped being in a drought
emergency, drought
warning or drought
watch at some point
after Feb. 12 of last year.
