Tice’s Crossbred Takes Market Beef Show
MICHELLE KUNJAPPU
Lancaster Farming Staff
HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) After months of washing,
drying, walking, feeding, watch
ing, and just taking care of “Bull
dog,” Nate Tice's hard work paid
off when the Crossbred steer got
the winning slap from judge
Scott Greiner at Monday after
noon’s junior market beef show.
For the first six months that he
owned the steer, Nate washed,
dried, and walked the animal
every other day, a regimen that
increased to every day in the past
six months.
Nate, a 4-H and FFA member
who has been showing for 10
years, and exhibiting cattle for
five years, purchased the
1,325-pound steer from an Indi
ana farm. He is the son of Tom
and Deb Tice, Lebanon, and is a
senior at Northern Lebanon High
School.
Funds from the $lO,OOO sale of
Bulldog will either go to college
(Nate is deciding on next years
plans being on a collegiate
judging team may be part of his
future) or toward “buying anoth
er steer or maybe a heifer,”
said Nate.
Nate also showed a hog during
Monday mornings competition.
Nate, from a 30-acre farm at
home, has 15 cows.
Taking home the reserve
champion spot was a Shorthorn
steer, “Fred,” exhibited by Ryan
Claycomb, 11, Bedford County,
from Claycomb Farms.
Coming out of the Shorthorn
lightweight class, the steer
weighed 1,275 pounds and was
purchased from a farm in Ohio
last March, according to Ryan.
This Vs Ryan’s third year show
ing cattle at the Farm Show. He
is the son of Scott and Tina Clay
comb.
Last year Ryan’s brother, Jus
tin, also took home reserve cham
pion placing in the junior market
beef show.

Show.
“There has been a lot of good
cattle through the ring,” said
judge Greiner. “I have tried to
focus on things that, in my esti
mation, are important to the in
dustry.”
Greiner picked out “cattle that
meet the needs of the consumer,
with rib meat and cutability
but also cattle good for us as pro
ducers, with body, dimension,
and natural style. They should be
well proportioned, well balanced,
and put together very well.”
The cattle in the championship
drive “are practical, fault-free
cattle,” according to Greiner.
Seventy four steers in the
Angus, Limousin, Hereford,
Shorthorn, Simmental, and
Crossbreds divisions competed
for the grand and reserve cham
pion spots.
Scott Greiner, Blacksburg, Vir
ginia, extension beef specialist at
Virginia Tech, judged the show.
Greiner, a native of lowa, has
been in Virginia for four years
and has judged in major shows in
more than 30 states.
