Winners Named
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Pennsylva
nia growers exhibited a variety of apples and
pears at this year’s Fruit Competition at the
87th Pennsylvania Farm Show.
Billy Brent’s Orchard, Fairfield, Adams
County, submitted this year’s winning entry,
given the overall Best of Show award.
Judge Jerome Frecon noted that, when con
sidering the quality of an apple entry, the sample
must be “true to name, be within size, and un
iform in size, appearance, and color.” One must
also “watch out for blemishes caused by things
like insect, disease, and cold weather damage.”
Apple growers this year in Pennsylvania faced
many obstacles in producing quality fruit for
their consumers. Frecon said that early frost in
the spring and drought in the summer “made it
a hard growing season,” but assured fruit lovers
they can still find good apples in the market
place.
Lawrence Yager of Gettysburg, Adams Coun
ty, was also a judge for the show.
