Dairy Profitability Program Set For Clarion County
SHIPPENVILLE (Clarion Co.)
Clarion County Cooperative Extension
in Shippenville will offer a program on
“Ways to Improve Dairy Profitability”
scheduled for Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the Nickleville Church in Nick
leville. The three-part program will
focus on com silage, a new insurance
program, and strategies for feeding
dairy cattle.
The com silage program will focus on
the effect of raising the cutting height of
corn silage on a dairy cow’s diet, It in
creases silage quality and digestibility,
but will also reduce harvest yields. The
discussion will center on yield and quali
ty changes when com silage cutting
height is increased and the milk yield re
sponse of dairy cows to the cutting
height of silage com while looking at the
economics and management benefits of
increasing the cutting height. Greg Roth
and Zhiguo Wu of Penn State Universi
ty will lead the discussion on the effects
of the changing the cutting height of
com silage. They will provide research
information gained and updated with
new research information from recent
field trials in 2002.

The AGR-Lite Insurance program
discussion will be lead by Jayson Harp
er, of the agricultural economics and
rural sociology department of Penn
State. He will be discussing the new Ad
justed Gross Revenue4Jtc program in
Pennsylvania and how it will affect
Pennsylvania farmers. The new insur
ance program is a streamlined, whole
farm revenue protection package that
can be used as stand alone coverage, or
in addition to other individual crop poli
cies.
The feeding strategies session will be
covered by Phil Anderson, Anderson
Dairy Management, and will focus on
alternative feeding strategies in a low
forage production year, and how to use
the resources and forages you have
available to your herd’s best advantage.
Anderson will discuss different working
strategies using alternative feeds avail
able in the area and how their use can
affect production and the farm’s bottom
line.
The program cost is $5 per person.

Awards Presented
For Small Grains
HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) Ed Wickard, Carlisle,
Cumberland County was the big
winner in the small grains com
petition at the 2003 Pennsylvania
Farm Show. Wickard entered the
grand champion wheat, oats, and
barley.
In addition to capturing three
champions, Wickard’s entries
won top honors in 12 different
classes. Entries were broken
down into four divisions: barley,
wheat, oats, and other miscella
neous grains, which include: tim
othy, rye, buckwheat, and soy
bean. Entries are judged on
purity of seeds, bushel weight,
and seed quality characteristics
such as cracked grains, insect, or
disease injuries.
Judge Murray Fisk, Tunk
hannock, was once again the offi
cial.

Directions to the Nickleville Church
from Interstate 80: get off exit 45 and
follow signs for Rt. 38 north. Proceed 7.8
miles on Rt. 38 until you see green sign
for Nickleville on the right (just beyond
Hepler’s Meats). There is also a sign at
the intersection for the church at the in
tersection. Turn right at those signs onto
State Rt. 2011 (paved road), travel 100
yards, and follow the road around a left
turn. Travel around 100 yards and go
straight onto Valley Church Road (grav
el road) and the church will be on the
left. Meeting is in the brick education
building.
From Rt. 322, between Kossuth and
Van, turn south on Rt. 38. Travel 2.6
miles and there will be a green sign for
Nickleville. Turn left onto State Rt.
2011. Travel 100 yards and turn left. Go
straight onto Valley Church Road and
the church will be on the left.
