Not only did it have its’ own distinctive high style found in wealthy southern cities such as Charleston and Baltimore, but even in the rural backcountry touches of quality cabinetry emerged. Often with a folk art quality. A traveling exhibit, “Furniture of the American South 1680-1830” on loan from the Co lonial Williamsburg Collection can be seen at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, N.C. until the end of January. The entire, perma nent collection is at Colonial Wil liamsburg, Virginia. CLUES; Before the American Revolution the greatest influence on style and design was in Vir ginia and the coastal colonies. Much of the interpretation de pended on the creativity of the cabinet maker. Sometimes styles were combined. Usually the maker remains a mystery, while his country of origin is obvious. An example is a drop front desk in the exhibt. The initials “W.H.” are on the prospect door along with the date “August/the 5. 1789. This is one of 30 objects found in northeastern North Car olina with his initials. The clue to origin is found in inlaid, ebonized floral ornaments; a German tech nique. Mint curator Barbara A.
