NW Pa. Grazing Conference To Feature Irish Dairymen DU BOIS (Clearfield Co.) For the latest information on grazing, updates on technological advances, and news from other graziers around the state and the world, plan to attend the Sixth Annual Northwest Pennsylvania Graz ing Conference here March 4. This year’s conference will again take place at the Ramada Inn in Du Bois, just off exit 101 on 1-80. Featured speakers will be Tom and John Roche, brothers born and raised in Ireland. Tom remained in Ireland to operate a 100 head Holstein-Friesian dairy herd that produces a 15,000 pound herd average on 200 acres of grassland. In addition, he runs a 300-head flock of sheep on the same acreage in a leader/follower system. Because of Ireland’s dairy quota sys tem, improving farm income by in creasing production is not an option. Tom Roche’s main objective is to maxi mize his return per acre by controlling or reducing his costs. John took another route and ac quired a doctorate in dairy nutrition. He has conducted research in Ireland, Australia, and currently works for Dex cel, a dairy corporation in New Zea land that conducts research on milk production for U.S. and New Zealand herds on both TMR and pasture sys tems. Both men have visited Pennsylva nia and the Northeast U.S. and feel this area holds great promise for grassland based dairy production. The brothers will join forces for the following presentations: “Is the Grass Greenest in Ireland?”, “Grazing Op portunities in the Northeast U.S., An Irishmen’s Point of View”, and “Dairy and Sheep in the Same Farming System” Several other nota ble speakers on this year’s program in clude Jim Grace, Cor nell University, and Peter Mapstone, Man lius, N.Y. They will discuss cost of produc tion figures from the New York Dairy Sum mary and from Map stone’s own herd. Dr. John Come rford, beef extension specialist from Penn State University, will explore the differences between comfed and grassfed beef and pro vide samples for an ac tual taste test. This year’s fanner panel will include Paul and Beth Wingard, beef producers from Clarion County, and Susan Burlingame, sheep and chicken producer from Warren County. Livestock and dairy producers need every advantage they can get to stay competitive in today’s markets. In tensive grazing man agement is one of the tools available to them. Improved man agement of under-uti lized pastureland pro vides producers with an opportunity to re duce their cost of pro duction, improve on farm income, and spend less hours on the tractor seat. The Northwest Pennsylvania Grazing Conference was started six years ago in an effort to bring the latest in grazing exper tise to our area and to provide producers with an opportunity to share and exchange ► ■* ****** pate and provide information on the latest in product development. Registration this year is $2O, includ ing a hot buffet lunch. Brochures and conference information can be obtained by calling Headwaters RC&D at (814) 375-1372, the county office of the Natu ral Resources Conservation Service, Penn State Cooperative Extension, or the county conservation district.
