O THE ANTIQUE
DETECTIVE
Anne Gilbert
How To Kecogni/e
Old English Silver
Knowing the shape of various
English silver date letters is one
way to discover valuable silver.
When a pair of 18th century
English sterling candlesticks can
sell at auction for $4,000 or more,
and an early 19th century Eng
lish sterling sugar caddy spoon
fetches more than $2,500 at auc
tion, doing research can pay off
for you. Not everybody is an ex
pert on silver marks, or wants to
spend the time searching for
them.
Equally important is knowing
the hallmarks and designs of the
various periods. Is the design in
keeping with the hallmark date?
CLUES: Just as in other an
tique categories, silver designs
have been reproduced through
the ages. If a candlestick has a
classical Corinthian column form
and a lion mark on the base, it
may or may not date to the 18th
century. The lion assay mark is a
clue to its English origin and was
used to designate solid or “ster
ling" silver, beginning in the year
1544.
The next clue to look for will
be the Duty mark (the head of
the reigning sovereign).
Hopefully you’ll discover the
heads of George 111 or IV on
highly prized Georgian silver.

Their profiles faced left. Silver
with the heads of King George V
and Queen Mary will be found on
pieces commemorating their 25th
anniversary on the throne. They
are referred to as jubilee marks.
What if you find a candlestick
with a scratched mark on the
base of say 1755? This could ei
ther be a mark showing it had
been repaired or was in a pawn
shop.
This is not a date mark.
A third mark on English silver
shows where the piece was made.
A leopard’s head designates a
London piece; a castle or thistle
were used by Edinburgh makers.
The date letter identifies the
exact year. Each 20 year cycle in
silver uses a different alphabet
design.
Either try and memorize which
alphabet represents the early
years or put examples in a small
notebook to carry when you go
antique hunting.
Names can lead you astray.
