For the first time ever, Farm Show guests will be able to witness farm equipment in action during the event. “Animated demonstra Farm Link Offers Training, Loans To New Farmers MANHEIM (Lancaster Co.) To tackle the continuing decline in new farm entry demonstrated by the precipitous 58 percent drop in new farmers under age 35 from 1982 to 1997, Pennsylva nia Farm Link will offer a com prehensive approach to getting into farming. Training in business planning and marketing skills, a 12-week, 36-hour course will begin in Feb ruary in the Manheim area. Dur ing the course, producers will ex plore niche markets, distribution channels, production options, management controls, business structure, cash-flow manage ment, and financing. The focus of the course is on the individual producer's interest, resources, and needs. Participants will walk through developing a business plan and come out of the course with a unique plan to develop their farm business and/or apply for a loan. In addition, new farmers can participate in a 2.000-hour ap prentice program certified by both U.S. and Pa. Labor and In dustry. Apprentices of legal working age are paired with a farm business employer in their chosen specialty. The Northeast Sustainable Agricul ture Research and Education (SARE) program is seeking nom inations for three new openings for its Sustainable Farmer Edu cator program. This program of fers grant support tor time and travel to articulate and experi enced farmers who want to share their knowledge with others. This program was launched in 2001 with the appointment of three producers for the past year, they have been speaking at conferences, meetings, work shops, and on-farm demonstra tions while continuing their farm ing operations. Apprentice may complete the program on their own family’s farm. After completing the business training and the apprentice pro gram, participants are eligible for living loans through Heifer Inter national. For example, upon completion of the business plan ning and marketing course and the Beginning Farmer Dairy ap prenticeship, participants may be eligible for a living loan, i.e., Pennsylvania Farm Link and Heifer will provide funds to pur chase up to 10 bred heifers. The participant is obligated to pass on the gift, in approximately three years, when another new farmers will be eligible to secure funds for a living loan. These loans can in clude all kinds of dairy and live stock as well as seeds or plants. All kinds of productions prac tices and farming enterprises can participate. The application process is competitive, and preference is given to successful farmers with previous experience presenting at workshops or in other education al settings. The demonstrations will offer a one-of-a-kind experi ence to Farm Show guests. “It’s a unique opportunity to actually show something working,” Yohe said. “You just don’t have that opportu nity at other venues. “We’re excited about it.
