Lancaster Farmland Trust Receives Top Rating
LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.)
Planning to make a contribu
tion to a nonprofit organization
by the end of 2002? Is the recipi
ent organization using the money
in the most effective way, ensur
ing that your contribution makes
the greatest impact on the cause
you care about?
In the wake of 9/11 related
nonprofit scandals, there is a
growing interest in charity
watchdog groups to objectively
rate the operation of nonprofit
organizations.
Charity Navigator, a Web
based watchdog group recently
gave local Lancaster Farmland
Trust, a nonprofit organization
that helps Lancaster County
farmers preserve their land, a
four-star rating for organiza
tional efficiency on their Website.
This is the highest rating possi
ble.

short-term spending practices
and the long-term sustainability
of the organization. To determine
the short-term practices, Charity
Navigator looks at an organiza
tion’s fundraising efficiency,
fundraising expenses, program
expenses, and administrative ex-
penses to provide potential
donors with a picture of
how efficiently the organi
zation operates on a day-to
day basis. Lancaster Farm
land Trust has a fund
raising efficiency of $.Ol

Fundraising and adminis

being spent on programs.
Long-term sustainability
is evaluated by looking at
an organization’s average
annual growth of operating
revenue, average annual
growth or programs and
services, and working capi
tal ratio. Lancaster Farm
land Trust scored high
overall on long-term sus
