Compared to last week, slaughter steers sold
firm to 1 00 higher to open the week, trending
I 00 to instances 2 00 lower late m the week The
early week supply included some fancy stock, al
though the Yield Grade 4‘s were definitely on the
rise, but due to the light run buyers were not
overly selective on the finish However, on a run
that included nearly 600 head of steers on Thurs
day, buyers made it clear that they would pro
cure the 4‘s, but at a discount Also, with the
February live cattle contract at the CME closing
at 77 35 on Thursday, many buyers are currently
not willing to pay 77 00-79 00 for steers until the
market gets some direction back m it It was only
last week that futures prices were in the upper
78 00 range and on the rise, what a difference a
week makes However, remember that around
this time a year ago Choice steers were averaging
around 67 00 in Lancaster County After advanc
ing 10 00 over the past nine weeks, the direct
feed yards out West are moving their steers at
mostly 73 00 as of Thursday night, which is 1 00
lower than last week Holstein steers sold steady
to 50 higher this week, with several very well
finished steers in the mix Slaughter heifers re
main in tight supply, although they ended the
week around steady to week on light tests
Slaughter cows kicked off the week trading weak
to 100 lower, however any losses early were
erased late m the week as cows trended steady to
1 00 higher This week‘s cow supply included
nearly 1150 head that went to slaughter Need
less to say, cow supplies are still ample Slaugh
ter bulls sold with a lower undertone early in the
week, trending steady to 3 00 higher late in the
week on a run that included almost 100 head
The total cattle receipts listed above include a
special feeder run that added 322 head to the
total Also, receipts were higher this week as late
last week a winter storm moved into the area
hindering the movement of livestock This
week's reported supply included 28 percent
steers, 5 percent heifers, 42
percent cows, 7 percent
bulls, with the balance
