State 4-H Horse Show
Winners In Snyder Co.
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) Snyder County horse
members recently participated in
the 43rd annual State 4-H Horse
Show, October 25-27 at the State
Farm Show Complex in Harris
burg.
Morgan Fleetwood, 12 year-old
daughter of Keith and Melinda
Fleetwood, was the first place
winner in Western Grooming
and Showmanship, Junior Divi
sion. Several other Snyder Coun
ty horse club members received
recognition in the state contest as
well. They were April Beaver,
Valerie Blew, Eric Shirk, and
Lauren Wagner.
“The members in Snyder
County said that the show was a
fun experience and they had a
great time,” says Kathy Weller,
Snyder County 4-H Program
Coordinator.
Fleetwood had her share of
complications earlier this year.
Just before the start of the show
season her horse Mambo died
suddenly. Through the generosity
of a local horse owner, she was
given a horse named Sweetpea to
use during the remainder of the
year. However, while riding
Sweetpea at the 3-County 4-H
Horse Roundup she was thrown
and suffered a broken finger.
Even though the pair was not
able to compete in the remainder
of the classes, they had already
completed the grooming and
showmanship contest and placed
fust, which made them eligible to
participate at districts. The pair
perfoimed skillfully at districts,
placing fourth and qualifying for
the state show.
More than 900 winners from
county and district competitions
vied for awards. Snyder County
had five 4-H'ers entered in the
competition. Events tested skills
in showmanship, equitation,
pleasure, jumping, driving and
timed events.
