the bunks hard Wednesday before the storm
moved in, leading to a lot of the supply in fairly
full conditions Other than the weigh-ups, the
quality of the run was very good There were
not enough Holstein steers or slaughter heifers
in Tuesday's run to test the market late in the
week Slaughter cows sold weak to 1 00 lower as
bidding was only moderate Buyer attendance
was fairly light as the road conditions kept a
few of them at home Slaughter bulls sold
sharplv higher when compared to Tuesday's
very light run The supply included 49 percent
steers. 6 percent heifers, 25 percent cows. 30
percent bulls, with the balance feeders

THIS WEEK
LAST WLFK
LAST YEAR
Compared to last week, slaughter steers sold
steady to weak early with closing prices as
much as 100 higher Steer receipts failed to
break 200 head the first two days of the week,
•'•l*
» *
however Thursday receipts were well over 500
head The opening day of deer season was part
ly to blame for the light early week receipts, al
though this time of year historically means
lower numbers as old crop supplies are about
cleaned up A major snowstorm moved into
Lancaster County on Thursday morning,
dumping several inches by late afternoon, and
even though the snow was piled high local pro
ducers forged their way into town to get in on
the current hot market On the good late week
run, bidding was fairly active even though cattle
were relatively full Despite the weigh-ups buv
ers are still actively procuring steers as supplies
are expected to get light this winter 1 ight num
bers, combined with a 73 00 direct market last
week out west, and live cattle contracts at the
CME moving above 79 00 Thursday, one could
easily say its lined up to be a wild winter The
fed Holstein and heifer supply this week was
very light, and a trend was not established, al
though the heifer and Holstein supply did in
cluded some well finished stock Slaughter cows
were strapped onto a roller coaster this week,
although once the dust settled prices trended
weak to 2 00 lower There was a little fire under
the cow market on Tuesday, but was quickly ex
tinguished by the heavy snow on Thursday
Slaughter bulls sold as much as 3 00 lower to
open the trading week, however trended sharp
ly higher late in the week on a run that included
over 90 head This week's reported supply in
cluded 35 percent steers, 8 percent heifers, 43
percent cows, 7 percent bulls, with the balance
feeders SLAUGHTER STEERS High Choice

CAI VFS Compared to last week veal calves
sold about steady Holstein bull calves returning
to feed kicked off the week 10(H) higher, then
hit a glitch on Tuesday as thev trended sharply
lower However on a very light run late in the
week prices trended sharply higher Bids did ex
ceed 150 00 for bulls this week, as buyers are ac
tively trying to fill their immediate needs Hoi
stein heifer receipts were light for the second
consecutive week, although trended with a
higher undertone early, with the snowstorm late
taking its effect on heifer numbers Even though
receipts were hampered on all classes late in the
week, there were still plenty of calves around
early as Tuesday's supply included nearly 1000
