Ida’s Notebook Ida Risser * My many houscplants seem to soak up water so fast and need to be watered quite often. My hus band received several dish gar dens during his hospitalization and they added to my collection. I keep starting new plants as older ones die. It keeps me busy tending almost 100 plants during the cold months. Sometimes I wonder how things can get dusty behind closed glass doors. Dishes need to be washed and shelves dusted more often than I’m willing to do it. After all, there are so many more interesting things to do like reading a magazine or a newspa per. And it is nice to get out of the house now and then not only on Sunday. One day I taught our Bible Study group, and another day I attended a women’s lun cheon at our church. The other Saturday I took a bus tour of Landis Homes and farms. The 1728 Snavely-Landis house in Manheim Township is the second oldest house in Lan caster County. At one time it was used for worship by a Mennonite congregation. It has a Bible cab inet built into the two-foot stone wall, a built-in jeUy cupboard, a large arch cellar, and an attic smokehouse. We also visited the Mennonite Historical Society where we saw their archives. The trip started and ended at Landis Homes on the farm of my grandfather, Ben jamin R. Landis. It was a rainy day but the trip was quite worth while if only to renew acquain tances with long lost cousins. Some of them came from other states to view the homes of their ancestors. teachers expect. COLUMBUS, Ohio Accord ing to the government, white chocolate really isn’t anything. That is, white chocolate doesn’t yet have an official ‘Standard of Identity” recognized by the Food and Drug Administration. Temporary permits to market “white chocolate” products have been issued since late 1993, but the agency hasn’t yet approved a final standard definition of “white chocolate.” But chocolate experts know what “white chocolate” is, and it doesn’t seem to quite add up to being chocolate. White chocolate is typically a blend of cocoa but ter, milk, sugar and possibly some flavorings. Real chocolate must contain chocolate liquor. Chocolate li quor isn’t alcohol but that’s what they call it anyway. That’s what is known as un sweetened chocolate. Or, the so lids can be separated from the fat, the results are called cocoa powder and cocoa butter. Real chocolate contains the whole kit and caboodle from the cocoa bean. White chocolate, as mentioned above, contains just the cocoa butter. Interestingly, white chocolate doesn’t keep as long as regular chocolate. Although cocoa butter is known for its stability, some thing in the cocoa solids seems to help prevent the milk in milk chocolate from going rancid over time. White chocolate doesn’t have as long of a shelf life. standing Conservation Educator of the Year” awards for 2002, Dec. 13 at the Seipstown Grange, 8501 Claussville Road, Fogel sville, at 7:15 p.m. The Conservation District has selected Martin and Glenda Ben nicoff to receive the 2002 Conser vation Farmer of the Year Award.
