Horse Tradition In Evidence At World Percheron Congress America GAY BROWNLEE Virginia Correspondent LEXINGTON, Va. Their biograph ical sketches in the World Percheron Con gress America 2002 booklet certainly made dear that keeping Percheron horses has been a long-standing family tradition for several owners and exhibitors. Some boast the Percheron tradition at the family homestead began back in the mid-1800s. That’s how it is with Ames Construc tion, Bumville, Minn, and Ames Perche ron Farm, Jordan, Minn., owner of the world champion gelding, Karrimont Gran deurs J.E.B. by Blackhome Grandeur Lyn and winner, also, of a world champion title in each the 6-horse hitch of stallions/ geldings and the 8-horse hitch of mares, stallions/geldings. Ames says its Percherons are considered the symbol of family pride, spawned in 1874 and carried through 128 years of suc ceeding generations. On the other hand, north or south of the Canadian/U.S. border Cape Cod Perche rons from Canada is a familiar sight wher ever the spotlight happens to be turned. In the 19305, Cape Cod grew from the enterprising labors of a man named Hed ley Creelman. Creelman used single Percherons in a logging and sawmill oper ation, skidding logs to the roads, and load ing them on sleds that were pulled to the mills by Percheron teams. Creelmans wife, Jesse, a nurse from Boston, was using a Percheron cross-driv ing horse for the necessary transportation to conduct medical house calls while her spouse was breeding mares, raising colts and showing Percherons at fairs. As the years passed, the family never lost its love for the versatile Percherons during the era when Hedleys son, Ken neth, and his brothers were industriously developing a wood siding manufacturing business. In 1990, when he cut back his profes sional commitments in favor of a semi-re tired status, Kenneth turned again to Percheron horses, his interest particularly focused on geldings, according to his sons, Ross and Douglas. Mt. Bethel Farms, Meriden, Kan. re tains the tradition that Adam Becker began in 1868. Becker raised Percheron draft horses and established an operation which was strong until the revolutionary advent of tractors. What had been a 300-head herd dwindled to a few teams maintained for feeding when conditions didn’t allow the use of tractors. Then in 1995, Percheron show horses returned to Mt. Bethel and the herd now includes some 40 mares, foals, and stalli ons. World Percheron Congress America class placings (top 3) follow: HALTER CLASS PLACINGS Registered gelding 4 and under; 1.
