AUGUSTA, N.J. On Aug,
11, exhibitors from the northeast
brought over 70 full blood and
percentage Boer goats to the first
annual Open Boer Goat Show at
the Sussex County Farm and
Horse Show.
New Jersey State Fair judge of
the show was Dr. Robert Herr,
Narvon.
Show co-chairs Don Karnas,
Port Jervis, N.Y. and Tim Kar
nas, Hanover, were extremely
pleased with the display of ani
mals and the turn out of exhibi
tors and spectators.
They were also enthusiastic
about Dr. Herr’s efforts. Accord
ing to Don Kamas, “Dr. Herr
not only judges the animals, he
teaches as he goes.”
According to Tim Kamas it
was the desire of the committee
to address the growing need for
meat goats on the East Coast.
“The banner (hanging from the
show table) says it all for us
farmers according to Kamas.
“Farmers provide the ever
changing world with a viable
meat market.”
Young breeders as well as
older breeders were excited to
show their breeding stock. They
took the time before, after and
even during the show to speak to
the public and answer questions
on the breed and the meat it sup
plied.
Maria Schaefer, Dingmans
Ferry, had the best pair of mixed
kids. Maria commented that, “It
isn’t only the bucks that you
have to look to for breeding
stock. You also have to have
sound does.” She proved her
point with her pair of mixed kids
Florence and Fred.
Amanda and Ashlee Boroughs
find that raising meat Jgoats is
more challenging than raising
dairy goats. They appreciate that
the meat provided by their goats
reaches a market earlier, faster

and at a steadier pace than goat
milk. The demand for meat far
outreaches the milk market.
“The meat from these goats is
feeding the world,” said Ashlee.
John and Pat Bloomer, Wind
song Farm, Burdett, N.Y., took
best Boer in show, along with
senior champion full blood doe,
best percentage doe, produce of
dam and breeder’s herd titles.
Don and Deb Borden, Hill
Place Farm, Coming, N.Y., took
junior champion full blood doe
as well as best doe in show titles.
Dennis and Kim Hamm, Pop
lar Hill Farm, Lindley, N.Y.,
took grand champion and re
serve champion full blood buck
honors.
Don and Tim Kamas of
Windy Rock Farm, Port Jervis,
N.Y., and Hanover, took grand
champion percentage buck, best
doe and offspring, and best pair
of buck kids.
The meat goat market seems
to hold new potential.
Goat meat is naturally low in
body fat with only 51 calories per
ounce. A four-ounce serving of
roasted goat has only 85 mg of
cholesterol. Seventy percent of
the world’s population eats goat
meat. The demand for goat meat
is so high that the producers
can’t keep up. Much of the goat
meat sold here in the U.S. is im
ported, and the demand is grow
ing.
Plans for next year’s show are
already in the works, according
to Don Kamas. “We will be mov
ing towards an ABGA sanction
ed show. If we can do that you
will be very surprised by the size
and scope of the show. We are
looking forward to bringing in
breeders from the south, Midwest
and Texas.”
