November 22,2002 Report Supplied By USDA NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER Summary for week ending Nov. 22, 2002. Total Receipts; 443,100, last week 493,200. Direct; 79,700, last week 76,600. Video/Internet: 2,700 head, last week 26,600. Auction Receipts: 360,700; last week 390,000. This week’s reported auc tion volume included 28 percent over 600 lbs and 43 percent heifers. Compared to last week, a tight supply of yearling steers and heifers sold firm to 3.00 higher. Calf offerings were large again this week and, despite the big runs, prices were 1.00-4.00 higher with in stances of as much as 10.00 higher. The full advancement on calf prices was real ized in areas that are popular markets for farmer feeders and backgrounders that winter calves on something other than wheat. These big gains were noticed from as far south as Arkansas, up through Mis souri and lowa, and across through Ne braska, Wyoming and Montana. Winter wheat regions of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas enjoyed continued good demand, but prices have started to level off as wheat pastures are mostly stocked and growing yards have their hands full. The Southeast markets were also only slightly higher as quality is tapering off and the bulk of the front-end calves have already been sold. But make no mistake! Feeder and stocker cattle markets were on fire this week and demand is about as good as it gets. Last week’s bullish cattle on-feed report and a quickly rising fed cattle market added fuel to the flames. After breaking 70.00 last week, feedlots started selling their showlists 1.00 higher on Wednesday and then grabbed another dollar on Friday to end the week 1.00- higher on live sales and 3.00- higher in the meat at mostly 112.00. Cattle feeders have started writing their closeouts with black ink, for a change, and attitudes are optimistic for this bullish run to continue. Background ers are now whistling as they ride through their wheat cattle and cattle feeders are singing to the radio while driving down feed alleys, instead of nervously listening for market updates. Anywhere cattle peo ple congregate, the smiling faces are a re minder that it has been a long time since the future has looked so bright. Not even a nationwide day devoted to the turkey can slow this bullet, as the demand for beef remains strong and cut-out values rose 6.00-7.00 this week.
