LOUISVILLE, Ky. It was a
historic moment Nov. 8-9 when
the 4-H Dairy Bowl Quiz Team
from Virginia won the national
championship for the first time in
contest history.
The 21-team competition was
conducted at the 2002 North
American International Live
stock Exposition Invitational
4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl.
Coach Dave Winston, exten
sion dairy scientist, 4-H youth,
from Virginia Tech was pleased
with his team’s performance and
proud of its hard work.
“I knew this was a strong team
before we went out there,” said
Winston, who was coaching his
ninth team. “You wonder about
what kind of questions you will
be asked, but they were very well
prepared.
“It was a nice accomplishment
for the Dairy Bowl program,” the
coach said with satisfaction. On
Jan. 22, at the State Dairymen’s
Convention in Staunton, he said
the youths will be recognized
again.

En route to the victory Virgin
ia had seven wins and one loss in
the double-elimination tourna
ment. The wins were against Illi
nois, Kentucky, Minnesota, New
York (twice), Ohio, and Pennsyl
vania.
The solitary loss came against
Illinois. “It was a close match.
We have a good rivalry,” said
Winston, a longtime friend of his
opponent. Winston, however, was
unable to recall the particular
question which caused the upset.
Team members were helped by
knowing each of their talents.
The team consisted of Sarah
Clemons and Josh Clemons,
members of the Madison 4-H
Dairy Club, and Brian House
and Sarah Leonard, members of
the Fauquier-Prince William 4-H
Dairy Club.
In addition to their having
studied hard in preparation for
the challenge, Winston said it
was their acquaintance with one
another that created a team
chemistry.

Brent Landis, ag services coor
dinator, praised the group for
their loyal support of agriculture
in attending the “largest ag ban
quet in Pennsylvania,” even in
the face of hard challenges such
as this year’s drought and ad
verse market conditions.
Such large attendance helps
show that “the vital role ag plays
in our community should never
be underestimated,” Landis said.
