November 12,2002 Report Supplied By USDA Cattle Calves Sheep Goats THIS WEEK LAST WEEK LAST YEAR CATTLE: Compared to Thursday, slaughter steers sold steady to weak. The quality of the run was aver age to plain, with not nearly the amount of fancy steers that usually make their way through the ring. Bidding was only moderate due to the quality, although very active when a higher quality steer would come through the door. Buyers did not seem to get very involved in Tuesday’s run and prices were affected due to the light interest The direct feed yards out West moved their low Choice steers at mostly 69.00 late last week, which would now be considered a slight premium to the local trade. A very light run of Holstein steers sold with a weaker undertone, with not enough slaughter heifers for a market test A fairly good run of daughter cows sold steady to firm. Fleshier cows were in fairly short supply, although the demand for good Breaking cows was definitely there The run consisted of primarily lean cows, and buyers had there work cut out for them as they sorted through the various qualities. Slaughter bulls were in very light supply, and sold with a weaker undertone on the very light test The supply included 47 percent steers, 9 percent heifers, 41 percent cows, 2 percent bulls, with the balance feeders. The sale kicked off with several high dresring Charolais cross steers, which sold from 70.00-72.75, which really got the good crowd that was on hand and the buyers involved in the sale; and it warn 4 ! long after that when the bulk of the Choice steers were trading in the 70.00 range with the high dressers trading up to 74.00. Bidding was very active as buyers welcomed both the increase in quality and the increase in re ceipts; as this weeks 4 run Included nearly 200 head more than last weeks 4 . Buyers were also very interested In procuring steers that weighed from 1000-1200 lbs to go back on feed.
