Notebook

It is a pleasure to share. For
years I shared vegetables from
my large garden, and now people
are giving me things.
My sisters visited us last week
and brought a bag of English
walnuts. They also had a variety
of mums. We also got green pep
pers and potato salad.
A lady who lives in my area
phoned to say that she had lima
beans that I could have. But, I do
have a few of my own. However,
I really appreciated the nice

that she gave us. My own saffron
bed bloomed nicely in October.
Sometimes, long ago, I would
take a basket and fill it with six
or more vegetables and take it to
a lady friend who I knew had no
garden. Usually, it was a big sur
prise for them as they sorted
through the basket. Now I’m
being given things.

they do extra jobs for us. Our

heavy air conditioners have been
moved to a basement shelf. Our
fence to protect the tomatoes has
been taken down and stored. Our
daughter from New Jersey even
weeded the raspberries. Now that
is job that we did not even do in a
good year.
I’ve put some flowers in pots
but I’m running out of space on
the window sills. Let’s hope the
red, white and pink geraniums
will bloom all winter. Some folks
think of the dropped blossoms as
“dirt” but I’m simply glad that
they bloom.
Allen is still weak but we are
hoping he will improve. He uses a
cane as he moves from his bed to
the table or the television.

New Hunting Regulations
HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) Under new antler restric
tions, hunters in most Pennsylva
nia counties must abide by a
three point on one side rule. Ex
ceptions include the 10-county
area of western Pennsylvania
where hunters will be required to
abide by a four point on one side
antler restriction: Armstrong,
Beaver, Butler, Crawford, Erie,
Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer,
Washington and Westmoreland.
Exceptions also include the six
special regulations areas counties
of Allegheny, Bucks, Chester,
Delaware, Montgomery and Phil
adelphia, where hunters will be
able to abide by the previous ant
ler restrictions of one antler of
three or more inches in length or
one antler with at least two
points. Junior military personnel,
active duty citizens and certain
disabled hunters may use previ
ous antler restrictions.
The Pennsylvania Game Com
mission defines a point as an ant
ler projection at least one inch
long from

base to tip. The brow tine and
main beam tip will be counted as
points regardless of length.
Hunters who mistakenly kill
bucks that do not meet these
qualifications must complete the
harvest tag and attach it to the
deer before moving it. The mis
take must be reported within 12
hours to the regional office that
serves the county where the buck
was killed. Hunters are permitted
to keep the deer but required to
pay $25 restitution and surrender
the antlers.
This year, unsold tags may be
used to harvest antlerless deer on
either public or private land in
the county of issue. Ail hunters
may also use crossbows during
the statewide firearms deer sea
son.
Hunters with questions regard
ing the upcoming season may
contact the Game Commission in
Harrisburg at (717) 787-4250.
