The 2002 Annual 4-H Livestock Sale was conducted during the Carbon County Fair recently. The county that has seen tre mendous growth in the member ship of the Carbon County 4-H Livestock Club saw 109 animals parade through the sale ring as auctioneer, Tim Houser, of Houser Auctioneers Inc., New Ringgold, accepted bids for the project animals of the 33 mem bers. A buyer’s luncheon was pro vided to all registered buyers with the food donated by Walck’s Restaurant, Parryville. Starting the side was the dona tion of a custom designed hand made quilt in honor of the 100th anniversary of the 4-H program. The Miller family of Fairyland Farm, Lehighton, paid for the materials and hand quilting with proceeds to be donated to the Carbon County 4-H Develop ment Fund. The successful bid for the quilt went to Scott and Tim Seltzer, Seltzer’s Nursery, at a figure of $460. The Seltzers were both members of the 4-H Livestock Club of Carbon Coun ty and now have children of their Grand champion market steer of the Carbon County Fair exhibited by Justin Cunfer was purchased by Houser Auctioneers, New Ringgold for the high bid of $1,750. Dan Atkins, Lebanon, a former breeder of swine and a graduate of Penn State University, judged the market swine show at the Blue Valley Farm Show recently. In an effort to raise money for the Bunny Busters Rabbit Club to host an ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders’ Association) rabbit show in the county, former member Travis Hawk donated two pens of rabbits for sale. Suc cessful bidders for the two pens were: Scott and Dawn George of Hollyhock Farms, Palmerton, at $95 and Miller’s Country Store, Lehighton, for $BO. The 236-pound grand champi on market hog of Luke Graver, 10, was purchased by Hometown Farmers’ Market owned by the Robert Dunn family for $5OO. Shanna Simmons, 18, then sold her 65-pound grand champion market goat to Mike Fegley, Fcg ley Fast Fill Mobil for $4lO. The successful bidder of Nich olas Simmons’ 576-pound cham pion dairy beef was Chas. S. Snyder Inc., Tamaqua, while Herman B. Snyder Plumbing, Le highton, was the high bidder of the 117-pound champion market lamb of Ashley Barry. teams while at Penn State and currently works with the live stock club and judging team of Lebanon County. The champion showman title went to senior Joel Geiger who Atkins described as being a very smooth and steady showman and also complimented Geiger on keeping the pig out where the judge could see him. Geiger, 17, is a senior at North ampton High School and the son Andrew Miller sold to Chas. S. Snyder Inc. for $150; reserve champion dairy beef of Chris tiana Graver sold to Chas. S. Snyder Inc. for $600; and the re serve champion market lamb of Luke Graver sold to Anthony Landscapes Inc., Buckingham, for $3OO. The remainder of the sale (ex cluding the champion and re serve animals) saw the average Grand champion market hog of the Car bon County Fair exhibited by Luke Graver waa purchased by the Hometown Farmers’ Market for the high bid of $6OO. Grand champion market lamb of the Carbon County Fair exhibited by Ashley Barry was purchased by Herman B. Snyder Plumbing and Heating, Lehighton, for $4OO. of Sherwood and Kathy Geiger. Geiger has also started his own swine breeding project with sev eral litters to his credit. Reserve champion fitter and reserve champion showman hon ors went to Nicole Kondziela, Moore Township, from the senior division. For his champion market hog of the competition Atkins select ed the 221-pound winner of the light medium weight hogs exhibi ted by Christiana Graver. In de scribing this champion Atkins said the hog puts everything to gether into a nice package in re gards to the ideals of the indus try. It was a nice showing kind of hog with eye appeal but still put together the desired carcass package. Graver, 12, daughter of Paul and Diane Graver of Lehighton, is in the seventh grade at Lehigh ton Middle School. Kondziela’s 233-pound Duroc entry of the medium weight class followed into the reserve grand champion market hog spot At kins described the reserve cham pion as being big framed, lean muscled, fresh in appearance, and trim yet carrying a lot of muscle. Graver and Kondziela fol lowed with the grand champion and reserve champion pair of market hogs, respectively. Results prices for market steers at $1,200; dairy beef at $540; market hogs at $256; market lambs at $194; and market goats at $143. The buy back program for the sale that enabled individuals and businesses that wish to support the 4-H members but do not want to keep the animal was provided by Lees port Farmers’ Market, Leesport.
