THIS WEEK
LAST WEEK
LAST YEAR 2775 1605
Compared to last week, slaughter steers sold fully
1.00-2.00 higher, with Instances of 3.00 higher on the
low Choice stock late In the week. Buyers kicked off
the week willing to give a little more to procure their
needs. However, late in the week bids were greatly in
creased as the Western direct market is lined up to put
another buck or two on their fats this week. A few
early sales have 35-60 percent Choice steers trading
from 66.00-68.00, which It about steady with last week;
although with the December live cattle contract cur
rently above 73.00, and February above 76.00, most
analysts expect finished steer prices to continue their
uptrend. However, It It difficult to compare the East
era market to the Western market as the larger feed
yards of the West feed their stock a lot faster to fill the

needs of the large packing houses that sit in their back
yards. Whereas, the farmer-feeder of the East rolls the
feed to their steers hard, but holds onto their stock
until their steers have fat in places not characteristic of
their Western counterparts. With that said, most pro
ducers in the East are accustomed to holding a
2.00-3 00 premium to the Western market on their
high Choice and Prime steers, and one could easily say
we are currently in a sellers market. Slaughter Hoi
steins sold firm to 1.00 higher on attractive runs. The
Holsteins presented on this weeks' market were lighter
than noted over the past few weeks; with buyers much
more willing to pay up to 60 00 for a 1300-1500 lb steer
than a 1600-1700 lb steer. Slaughter heifers began the
week fairly scarce, although on an Increase in receipts
late in the week heifers sold 1.00-2.00 higher. The heif
er runs late in the week included some very fancy
stock, with buyers willing to run heifers beyond the
70 00 mark due to the improved quality. Lean slaugh
ter cows sold mostly steady to firm for the week.
Breaking and Boning cows sold sharply lower to kick
off the week, making up some of the losses late in the
week as they trended up to 2.00 higher. Buyer attend
ance continues tc fluctuate throughout the week; with
quality alio a deciding factor as no matter how many
buyers there are on hand, none of them are interested
in paying market value for full or overly weak cows
This week's supply included 29 percent steers, 7 per
cent heifers, 43 percent cows, 7 percent bulls, with the
balance feeders.

CALVES: Compared to last week, veal calves sold
steady to 5 00 lower. Veal runs continue to be fairly
good, with buyer interest continuing along the same
lines for several weeks. Holstein bull calves suitable for
special-fed veal barns sold very mixed this week. On a
good test Tuesday, bulls sold sharply higher In very ac
tive bidding and buyer interest However, late in the
week heavier bulls sold with a lower undertone, as
lighter bulls sold with a higher undertone. Wet weather
and rain showers have calves in rough conditions at
times, although calves have yet to come through the
ring looking very sick. Holstein heifers sold with a
lower undertone this week, as prices failed to surpass
the 500.00 mark. The supply remains fairly good, al
though buyer interest is very sporadic
