Conditions ranged from empty to full, with the recent colder weather definitely startihg to show on the weaker cows. Fleshier cows sold mostly weaker, with instances of 100 lower on the Breaking cow supply. Buyer at tendance was very light, as it has been over the past month. There remains a steady flow of slaughter cows coming to town, with cow cutout values trending around steady, and demand remain about steady as well. Slaughter bulls sold steady to weak. A few highly muscled Billies sold higher than last week's run as buyers are still interested in owning the good ones However, the quality of Monday's run was very mixed, with most of the goats very plain. Tuesday’s supply In cluded several consignments of very well finished steers, with the finish on Monday's supply about aver age Bidding was relatively active on the bulk of the run, and very active on the higher quality stock. How ever, there is still room for improvement as the West ern direct market moved 35-65 percent Choice steers at mostly 68.00 late last week. Which is important, as most local feeders are accustomed to a 2.00-3.00 premi um when compared to the Western market; and right fully so as the bulk of the Eastern-fed cattle stay on feed for greater periods than do the cattle In the larger feeding operations of the Midwest, which turns out a better finished product Holstein steers sold steady to firm, as several hard-fed Holsteins drew very good buyer interest The slaughter heifer supply was fairly light, although the few on hand sold steady to firm. Lean slaughter cows sold with a lower undertone, with Breaking and Boning cows trading sharply lower Buyer attendance was light, with the few on hand struggling to keep up with the 400 head supply. The fleshier cows suffered much worse than the lean cows, as bids were 2.00-4.00 lower. Slaughter bulls also trended lower on a very light run. After several weeks of very mixed bidding and buyer interest buyers are procuring calves much more aggressively. Even the wet cold rains could not cool off the bullish tone of Tuesday's auction. Holstein heifer buyers did not share the same attitude as the bull buy ers, as heifer prices trended lower. Last week prices were in the upper SOO.OO range, with this weeks* bids struggling to break the SOO.OO barrier. Bidding was extremely ac tive early, tapering off slightly towards tbs cod of the light run as quality tended to be lower. Buyers came in with their guns Mazin', as bids matched the fancy sup ply How for Mow. Demand could have been supported by die lighter run, as Thursday’s supply was over 200 head lighter than last weeks. However, with the direct feed yards moving their low Choice fats at 68.00, these longer and harder-fed eastern cattle should hold a pre mium to the Western market; this thinking was farmer supportive, and It doesn't hurt that the December live cattle contract at the CME is above 73.00, with the February contract sitting above 76.00. Slaughter heifer buyers also joined in as prices treaded 1.00-2XIO higher on the attractive offering. It has been a while since a good run of fat heifers went through the ring, and it was a welcome change to see some well finished stock. Holstein steers sold firm to 1.00 higher as spillover from the colored cattle lent support Holstein numbers were also higher, and with the increase there was also a noticeable increase in quality. Holstein weights were not extremely heavy, as they have been over die last few runs; and buyers took notice as they have a lot more use for the lighter carcasses. Lean slaughter cows sold firm to instances .50 higher, with Breaking and Boning cows trending up to 2.00 higher.
