824-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 2, 2002 Lancaster Farming O THE ANTIQUE DETECTIVE Anne Gilbert Collectors Discovering Globes, Scientific Instruments As fascination continues to grow for scientific antiques, more are coming to market. In the past only museums were auction bidders when they made an occasional auction appear ance. Today, the generation that works and plays with computers has turned to collecting examples of early scientific discoveries. Their growing popularity has led Skinner Auctions in Boston to hold specialized auctions. Globes are among the most popular, since they can be deco rative as well as historic. Consider that globe bases were made in the popular furniture styles of the day; Sheraton to late Victorian. Scientific antiques, such as globes, were never made in quan tity. A pair of globes, in early 19th century America were as ex pensive as a sofa made by Dun can Phyfe. These days the earliest and rarest globes can cost in the thousands, but lesser examples can be had at auction for a few hundred dollars. You may be sur prised that that are many types that include terrestrial and celes trial. Some are as small as three inches high. The golden age of globes is be fore 1840 when they were printed by hand. They were ever chang ing from the late 18th to 19th centuries, major years of geo Interpretive Demonstrations At Elizabethtown Winters Heritage House ELIZABETHTOWN (Lancas ter Co.) Equally collectible are early catalogues advertising globes and other scientific instru ments. A rarity would be the cat alogue printed in 1848 by Benja min Pike of New York, complete with drawings. CLUES: Have you passed up a potentially antique globe because it appeared to be 20th century? When examining globes, remem ber that they were updated. Therefore, changes were peri odically made on their papers, called “gores.” These came in sets of 12 and were in spherical shapes. They were pasted over the old data and lacquered. There may be a difference between the dates on the terrestrial and celes trial parts. Since there were more geo graphic than heavenly changes, the date on the terrestrial part will tell you the age. Globes made in the 18th and 19th centuries had a core of wood, covered with plaster. The data was printed from en graved plates, pasted on the plas ter and painted with water colors then varnished. There are globe novelties to add to a collection. They include pocket globes. These measure from 2'/’- to 3-inches. The celes trial “gores” were placed inside. For beginning collectors there are 20th century globes, that are going up in value and still priced ety of baked goods include pumpkin pie and mincemeat pie. Bill Hackett will demonstrate woodworking by making a period reproduction table for an 1847 kitchen. Even the mass produced school globes of the 19th to mid-20th century are con sidered collectible. If globes aren’t of interest, con sider rare early, scientific instru ments. They were often finely en graved with the name of the maker and date. Most desirable would be those made of various metals from bronze to silver. Some were inlaid with silver. Great care was used not only in the calibration of measure ments and angles but in their decoration. Since every country made sci entific instruments, they can be found anywhere. However, collectors advise that the finest are sold either by a few specialist dealers in London and Paris. Best would be to make a discovery at an estate sale. The smaller astronomical and surveying instruments offer af fordable opportunities for collec tors. A pocket sextant, late 19th century could be bought at auc tion for $350-450. A 19th century pocket sundial could have an auction price of $5OO or more. Research is a must. Keep in mind that there are still many discoveries awaiting.
