Editor’s note: Written by Pennsylvania Agriculture Sec retary Samuel E. Hayes Jr. ex clusively for Lancaster Farm ing, this column provides monthly updates on the excit ing new construction under way at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Construction is on schedule to be completed for the 2003 Farm Show. WHAT IS THIS? As I begin this report concern ing construction at the Farm Show Complex, I ask the ques tion: What is this “geometric” ob ject? Where is it in the Farm Show Complex? I can tell you it is part of the new construction; and, I men tioned it in a previous report. You can see it from inside the Farm Show Complex; and, you can see it from outside the Farm Show Complex. That is how close we are at the Pennsyl vania Department of Agriculture in having construction at our Farm Show Complex complete and ready for our Pennsylvania Farm Show in January 2003. Every venue in the Farm Show Complex is 95 percent to 100 per cent complete at this time. This benchmark includes new con struction and upgrades. The last several weeks have been difficult because the Penn sylvania Department of Agricul ture was hosting major events while continuing our massive construction project. During these weeks we hosted the All-American Dairy Show, which has become the largest daily show in the nation in just a few years. There were more than 3,200 head of dairy cattle from 30 states and Canadian provinces. The dairy show was followed by the Keystone International Livestock Exposition with more than 5,000 head of beef, sheep, swine, and horses from across the U.S. and Canada. These two ex positions were followed by the weeklong Pennsylvania National Horse Show, which was world class and brought olympic-class riders to our Farm Show Com plex. Just last weekend we had ap proximately 1,000 4-H members and their horses competing at the state 4-H Horse Show. And now, for a whole week, we are hosting the largest Standardbred Horse sale in the U.S. The dairy, livestock, and three equine expositions are five really great agriculture events that are leaders in the nation and world. And while all these very, very large events were being hosted by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, construction contin ued at our Farm Show Complex. Aggies by the hundreds, ani mals by the thousands, livestock trucks by the hundreds, construc tion workers by the hundreds, and dozens of construction vehi cles and equipment all trying to occupy our construction site at the same all doing much differ ent things. It has been a chal lenge, but our construction schedule has been kept on tract. Our target for completion was set for this December. We are going to make it. And all venues will be ready for our Pennsylva nia Farm Show in 2003. As I started this report, I asked if you could identify the “geomet ric” object which is part of the new construction at our Farm Show Complex. It is the new dome which has been incorporat ed into the overall architecture of the Farm Show Complex. It is translucent. More Galvanized Coating 301-334-3977 1283 Joni Miller Rd.
