One of the grants awarded
AAnkl DITC 2001 was to conduct a
vUnli Dl I w study on the feasibility of a
small grains ethanol plant in
Maryland.
Illinois Governor George H.
Ryan announced in mid-Au
gust that he is releasing
$280,000 in Illinois first fund
ing to the Illinois Com Grow
ers Association (ICGA) to
support the startup of a new
farmer-owner ethanol produc
tion facility in Lena. The state
already has dedicated about
$3 million in state support for
the plant, which will use an
estimated 14.5 million bushels
of com every year.
ICGA will assist the Adkins
Energy Cooperative a farm
er-owned venture in the de
velopment of a state-of-the
art, $6B million production fa
cility that will produce 40 mil
lion gallons of ethanol every
year.
Happenings In
Other States
The Maryland Grain
Checkoff Program was ap
proved for another five years
when it passed by an 85 per
cent margin in a referendum.
The mandatory checkoff
states that a farmer must pay
an assessment of one-half of
one percent (.5 percent) to be
collected on the net value of
each bushel of grain sold.
Funding is used for education,
research, and market develop
ment The board appropriates
most of the approximately
$450,000 col
lected annually to provide
grants to carry out these activ
ities.
