Webster, author ot the first American dictionary
In 1783, his American Spelling Book appeared,
which first Americanized the bnglish spelling ot such
woids as colour and labour by dropping the it Webstei
made his being as a lawyci. journalist, and school
teacher, but we tend to remember him for the many
words he folded into the Compendious Dictionary of
the English Language published in 1806, and, in 1828
the Ament an Dictionary of the English Language
Webster wrote his dictionaries
